I chose this photo to reenact because I had the best idea of how and where I'd take it and I also liked the calm and tranquil setting that it gave off to me. I didn't have a second person to use for the photo so I duplicated myself for it. I tried to make my clothes different so the duplication was less obvious, but I still used the same duffel bag for both characters. The car has been in my family since it was bought new by my great grandmother in 1971 and the car's spent its whole life in Oregon. This reenactment photo was taken in the exact same spot almost 12 years apart from the original. We tried our best to wear the same outfit. My sister's even wearing a band-aid in the exact spot on the left knee as the original pic.

Although I don’t know the context behind it, it’s very powerful to me. The simplicity of the background really helps highlight the emotions of the person. When I took my picture, I noticed the sky looked really cool. In color, it doesn’t seem like much but when I put it in black and white and tweak it a little, it looked turbulent, perfectly reflecting the emotion I was trying to convey. The original photo immediately reminded me of my mother and grandmother. My mom and grandmother have the biggest smiles, my mom gets her smile from her. This photo shows natural beauty and pure happiness from a black women. That’s what I think my mother is.

I was out with my sisters and we saw a large group of young protestors gathering in the streets of MLK. When we joined we instantly felt empowered and inspired. We were young people taking up space, letting it be known that Black Lives Matter and being unapologetic about it. With Alberta being a very gentrified location I decided to pick the first photo which was taken 32 years ago. My grandmother used to work on houses and this was one of the houses she used to work on and actually ended up buying this home. The new photo is now her house currently I love it because I grew up in this house, I even lived in this house at a point in time and just to see how much it’s changed from back then and to be on such a street and still have your house is very precious to me. I feel like it’s also very important because when my grandma did first moved into Portland her and my mother and uncles and aunts were on of the very few white families on Alberta.
