5.- To talk about an action in the past that takes place in the middle of another action.
Example 1: When she arrived, I was watching a movie.
Example 2: When she talking on phone, I was playing video games.

There are 3 basic uses of the progressive past:

1. Talk about an action in progress at a definite time in the past:

Example 1 :I was watching the game on TV yesterday at 2 pm.

In the example above we have a specific time (yesterday at 2 pm) and an action that was in development at that time. Another

Example 2: What were they doing at 11 last night? (What were they doing at 11 last night?)

2. Talk about two or more actions that were in progress at the same in the past:

Example 1: Jerry was eating cheese while Tom was drinking milk. (Jerry was eating cheese while Tom was drinking milk)

Tip: for this specific use we must use the word "while" which means "while"; Please, in this context do not use “when” which means “when”.

3.We use this verb tense to give context to a story, tale or anecdote:

Example 1: It was a nice day; the sun was shining, the birds were flying and the flowers were blooming…

Note: Spanish speakers often make the mistake of confusing the past progressive in English with another verb tense in Spanish. The phrase:

Example 2: She was sleeping while I was working

It should ALWAYS be understood as "she was sleeping while I was working" and NEVER as "she was sleeping while I was working"

Meaning: something that doesn't happen very often

Meaning: If two people see eye to eye, they agree with each other
