It was  one of the principal Italian composers of comic operas. He  moved to Naples, where he went to  a free school  Beginning in 1761 he studied for 11 years at the conservatory of Sta. Maria di Loreto.
He began his career with the comic opera  "Le Stravaganze del conte".  Its success was followed by " L’Italiana in Londra" (Rome, 1778), a work still performed in Italy.In 1787, at the invitation of Caterine II he went to St. Petersburg as court musician. Then he went to Vienna  where he he produced his masterpiece, "Il matrimonio segreto" (The Secret Marriage).                                        He lived mainly in Naples, and during its occupation by the French Republican troops in 1799, he  showed his republican sympathies, so that on the return of the Bourbons he was imprisoned. After being released, he left Naples in broken health.

He was a composer of religious music and operas, notable as an innovator in his use of the orchestra. His first two operas were comic: "L’errore amoroso"  and "Odoardo" . He went to Rome in 1740 and produced two serious operas there. One of his comic operas was performed in Paris in 1753, helping to spark the notorious Querelle des Bouffons (Quarrel of the Buffoons).  His last omposition  (for Naples) was a Miserere for two voices, finished just before his death and for long his best-known work.

General Giuseppe Garibaldi, looking for equipment to finance his army, stopped in Aversa and asked for a loan to the Baroni de Conciliis family. The loan would have been repaid by the Savoy state at a centuplicated rate. The noble family could not grant it to him. Instead it was the wife of the merchant Giuseppe Motti, who assured Garibaldi the necessary amount of money. The woman, a native of San Marcellino, had married the trades Motti and lived in Aversa. The chronicles of the time show that the woman, alone and at night, with a dagger hidden under the shawl, crossed a country road and reached his father's house, convincing him to invest his dowry. She is a character to be admired for the tenacity and courage shown: she had taken considerable risks, considering the historical situation and her status as a woman!
