The Shabbat is not necessarily not doing any work, it is more of not doing anything not necessary to sustain life. It speaks of Melachah, or work that has to do with controlling your environment. They have this ideal because God created the world in six days, but declared that the seventh day be for rest. They restrict many things, such as baking, lighting a fire, and riding in a automobile. (They do not permit this because this has to do with lighting the engine, a big resemblance to kindling a fire. See also "Prohibited Activities") Though, any of the restrictions or commandments may be violated if necessary to save a life, which makes perfect sense.

The Shabbat is a very holy day. In the Jewish faith you don't do any form of work on the day. Preparing for this day you must have a few things done before you can start. I feel like the most important things are cleaning up your house, turn off/put away any mukteh items ( pens, money , bags), and turning off any form of electronics.
The reason the Jews don't work on Shabbat is in the Torah. You can find these verses in Numbers 15:32-36 and Exodus 34:21.

Music is a very important part of the Shabbat. In between meals the family sings Zemirot ( Forms of hymns). The most popular Zemirot is ''Shalam Aleichem'' witch mean ''peace be with you''. This hymn is believed to welcome the angel of peace. The song is used to keep the good angel on your side and keep away from Satan.
