Introduce the artist in focus and let the children select, draw, colour examples of their work. Use plenty of glue as these often fall out! Model use of the new vocabulary as you teach so the children can add it to their sketchbooks too.

All steps in the planning need to be taught please. The planning is condensed into 6 lessons but can be broken down further in a longer term if you wish. Any fewer lessons will not be enough to teach the skills and techniques before the children apply them in a piece of work independently.

KS2 especially - Encourage the children to annotate their sketchbooks. This could be in the first or last part of the lesson - recapping what was learnt in the previous lesson and using new vocabulary, as they work in sketchbooks, or at the end of a lesson when reviewing. Children can revisit and work onto previous pages if they are continuing a piece of work as needed.

Ask the children to re-glue or staple work in which falls out from previous units please. Additional work, including research can be stapled in as flaps to the same page being worked on. Other schools are using this method and it will save pages!

EVALUATIONS

End of unit evaluations should be done with sketchbooks on desks. It is not a memory test of what has been taught. Children could work in pairs to discuss the questions and then complete their own sheet. In KS1 this could be carried out as a small group discussion with an adult scribing the children's comments. In Year 3 a whole class discussion can be carried out before children complete their responses (adults may scribe for some SEN children).

As you teach encourage experimentation and exploration of skills and techniques. Mistakes are welcomed, children can work over the top of them if they are sketches!

At the HUB meeting we discussed this and most teachers agree that Art cannot be assessed in the way other subjects are. It is not right/wrong or clear cut. A child's progress is a journey and children have many different starting points. All art leads agree that a conversation with each child is important, at the end of a unit, about what was learnt, what went well, what they would change or try next. Our evaluation sheet structures this conversation and it is important not to overly support these discussions and responses. As the teacher you know who needed more support than others to learn the skills, who used their own ideas and completed the tasks fully. For example - T and E Y3 - One was able to create a pattern independently and the other is beginning to create repeating patterns. Most children could identify a mistake in my pattern, but a few could not. These children are NOT meeting expectations in Art for their year group. The LO's in the planning are based on NC expectations with progression built in from one year group to the next. If a child does not meet these year group expectations across a series of lessons then they are 'working towards' in Art.

Years 4-6 also experimented with 'blind drawing' and 'continuous line drawing'.

All teachers should be modelling in lessons. This has a huge impact on children's outcomes! Use a sketchbook each week yourself and then you will have it next year to show and add to. We cannot expect children (especially those with SEN) to know what to do in a practical subject from verbal instructions alone. Think about how you would feel as a student in an art lesson where nothing was demonstrated. Imagine being in a PE lesson with only verbal instructions given, no demonstration. The impact is massive. 🙂

Instead look back at the planning ideas e.g. We explored how shapes work together - similar/contrasting, regular/irregular, how to combine colours (this is where you have used the new vocabulary in discussion and teaching. Refer back to it in the evaluation.

There are objectives in the planning specifically for the use of sketchbooks. Using sketchbooks effectively is a skill we need to model and teach.

Vulnerable children in ART and DT lessons

Consider flexible access over rigid artistic outcomes. Focus on process rather than product to boost self-esteem, improve social skills and allow for non-verbal expression. Classrooms are safe spaces for mistakes (happy accidents) which are part of the creative process. Pupils are able to express emotions they may not be able to verbalise. Build trust and confidence by offering 1:1 encouragement. Sit with a vulnerable child and support for part of the lesson. Give children autonomy over their choices of colour, materials and design to build self-esteem and independence. Scaffold and structure learning - break a project down into steps, with visual guides, photographs of each stage to guide the process. Provide extra, small group time to pre-teach/ teach specific techniques or how to use tools. Resources may need to be curated or restricted to avoid overwhelming a child with choice. Think about paint brush size - for particular children. Build in movement breaks.

Make learning objectives clear to the children - today we are learning to... Ensure these are in folders for each lesson/ stage of the process. In the unit planning the objectives in bold are the ones specific to your media type. These should be evident in sketchbooks.

Incomplete work in books and folders

Please ensure that work is finished. SEN pupils may need extra support to complete a task or a scribe to write on an evaluation sheet to reduce the cognitive load. A little quiet classroom time e.g. 5 minutes during lunch or whilst others sit and read may be enough. It is not a writing lesson. Whilst we expect all written work to be the best pupils can produce i.e. handwriting and spelling, this may be a big ask for an SEN pupil in the afternoon, so write for them. It is amazing how much more they communicate under these conditions!
