Traditional Texan Music

I have decided to choose this topic because traditional texan music is not considered its own music for the fact that it is apart of American culture. But Texas was not always apart of America and developed its own culture long ago. I feel this is worth representing because Texas does have a very rich culture and I feel that this would make for a very artistic and well down chair. What makes Texan culture so rich and worth representing is because its large influence on the art community. Texas is known for its famous museums across the country. The Dallas art district is known to have the most art museums and galleries throughout the entire nation.(“Reasons I find Texas so Attractive and Rich in Arts and Culture”)

This joint on the chair are two blocks of woods. One block of wood is carved out all the way through. This joint is called mortise and tenon woodworking joints. This joint is one of the strongest joints and is made of two pieces of wood at 90 degree angles. When doing this you can use glue to seal it.
When I am creating my chair a joint that i would use would be the mortise and tenon joint because i know that I would want a sturdy joint so that my chair can hold a lot of weight.

The other features used in this chair is the way the builder weaved the seat with string, they could have done this because this is how they traditional built chairs in Ireland. For my chair I would not use this feature because it dose not associate with my culture and it would not be sturdy enough for the width of my base.

When the builder was making this chair he decided not to use colour or paint and I would not use this for my chair because Traditional Texas has a very rich culture that involves lots or art and colour.

This chair consists of wood and a leather cushion. Which is made up of cotton and is sewn to a wood board and placed (possibly glued) on the wooden chair frame. To make this chair the person had to put wood together and he possibly made a mortise and tenon joint and could have used some sort of glue to put it together. I would have to be able to drill and carve out holes to make this chair, so i would have to know how to work a drill. What i like about this chair is that it is sturdy and can hold a lot of weight. What I dislike about this chair is that it is very bland and does not have much colour to it. The builder probably only stained the wood and he used brown leather. What I would try to avoid when making a chair similar to this is making the backing of the chair stand for something cultural and meaningful, then just making it plain. Some things that I could take away from this is staining the wood, this could possibly be a tool that could be valuable in capturing Traditional Texan Music. Most of everything used to make this chair could be found at SSIS but I may to get leather outside of school.

I plant to meet with her and ask her questions so that I can for sure know that I have showed the culture enough.

I will use a mortise and tennon joint to put the backing of the chair together.

when i start i need to make a sheet of all of the pieces that I will need and the measurements s of them. After this i will sand down the pieces using sandpaper and the sanding machine. Once all of the pieces are the same size and sanded down then put them together using the joints such as mortise and ten-non and the rabbet joint. Once I finish the joints i will secure some of the joints with nails so they have more support. then when all the pieces are secured together stain it using wither coffee or tea. The tea/coffee will give it a darker look. This is when you put the final cushion on using staples and can sand the chair one more final time and they chair should be completed.

After testing my chair i found that it was sturdy but not heavy enough to not slide across the floor. This skill can be used with any product that is made to test how durable it is and if it endures impact will it break or stay together. After doing this test I concluded that my chair was sturdy but that i needed to work on making the legs the same length.

Before now I have never done this before and using the videos that Mr. Donnelly provided helped with learning how to draw out the chairs. This would mean that my chair could hold the weight of about a 10 year old.

This could help me in the future make a sturdy chair that would not slide when hit. When my chair endured the impact it slide about 36 centimeters this means it does not have very good grip. My chair did not break when hit which is a good sign that it is sturdy.

The last test that I executed was another impact test where I recorded if the chair broke or became wobbly, how far it traveled after bing hit by the back of the door. This test will help me understand if my chair can endure a repetitive beating. My reasoning for this is because the size of my chair is small and meant for a toddler, if it were to be put in a toddlers room it could be hit or damaged but it should not break. From what i learned from this test i have come to the conclusion that my chair would be fit in a toddlers room for it never became very damaged and does not slide with a certain amount of weight on it.

The biggest difference to my original design specifications was the size of my chair. Originally is states that my dimensions would have been 15 by 20 by 30 but after messing up my centimeters and inches I ended making my chair bigger by making the dimensions 20 by 20 by 40. This ended up making my chair more proportional and larger so that a toddler would be able to fit on it and it would hold its weight.
Another last minute change to my chair was i did not stain it to make it darker but i will just glaze and add the leather which will not be a dark brown but a white color. The reason fro this is because due to time constraints I wasn't able to order the dark leather and the white leather with the dark chair would not have looked aesthetically pleasing.
In the beginning of my chair I had planned to also paint the bottom of the legs orange and white but when I was putting the chair together I saw that painting of it would have made it look too childish and the type of chair I was going for, it also would have clashed with the stain in the leather I had picked out at that time.
Another thing that I changed when making my chair were the joints that I used. The joints that I used that I did not show were the doweled 🤬 joint and the rabbet joint, they were used instead of a 🤬 joint and mortise and ten-non joint. These joints were sturdier and allowed the chair to look cleaner and more organized.

When Kaeden was testing my chair by sitting in it he said that it was wobbly as it went from the right-side to the left-side. I would improve this by being more precise when cutting my wood pieces and making sure that they are all the same length when glueing them in and one of them is not veered to the side. By doing this I would hope that the legs would not wobble and cause someone to fall off of it.

This would enlarge the chair and hopefully make it more comfortable and fit peoples 🤬.

I would not make it much larger for it is for a toddler and toddlers don't have long legs or has beg butts as we do so it wouldn't be uncomfortable in the sense of size.

What Kaeden and Helena had said about my chair was that they were scared to lean back for they thought they would break it and fall down. I would improve my chair by making a stronger dowel joint and using more glue. I originally chose this joint because it would work the best with the wood that I had already put together and the fact that I had nails and could not make very deep holes for the chopsticks. If i add more glue this could solve the problem of the backing not being able to do its job and support the weight of someone pushing on it.

By looking at the chair it is not obviously clear that this is Texas culture for the main Texan element is the leather and the white paint that the chair is fully painted with and there is nothing else that could let me know that this represents Texan culture. But after finding out that this chair is Texan culture it had become clear to me the culture that the chair was presenting.

Something that could be added to the chair are the state colours, they could be painted on or stitched into the leather to make it more clear that I am presenting Texan culture. Texas' colours include white and burnt orange.

There is nothing on this chair that ineffectively represents the culture, the cushion is made of leather, the paint is white which is one of the state colours and the shape of the chair is used to make the chair more aesthetically pleasing.

I have not learned anything from this chair because being from Texas I know that the state animal is the Texas Longhorn and the state colours are white and burnt orange.
