Commodore Perry tried to visit Japan to establish trade relations like other foreign countries had tried to. The Portuguese and the Dutch had some success, but Japan was still able to control its contact with them and maintain policy of isolation. In the early 1800, more foreign ships (Russian, British, and Americans) began to come to Japan, but Japan's response was to keep them out, using force if necessary.

In July 14, 1853, Perry sailed into Uraga Harbor with a party larger than Japan has seen before and presented a letter from the President talking about trade, protection of shipwrecked Americans and purchasing coal for ships. Perry would return in 1854 for the Japaneses' answer to these demands. Perry returned with eight black ships and more soldiers to sign the Treaty of Kanagawa which opened two ports to America, created an American consulate in Japan and accepted the demands of the shipwrecked sailors and the coal. In 1885, Japan signed treaties with America, England, France, the Netherlands and Russia for more trading which ended up with Japan losing control over their trade. Below is the final page of the English version of the Treaty of Kanagawa signed by Perry.
