It is full of votive offerings (dedications) by the citizens of Athens, craftsmen and artisans to the patron saint Athena. They are exhibited in the hall, scattered in the same way they were scattered on the area between the Parthenon and Erechthion. Typical of the period is the serious look the statues have, looking ahead in front of them, as if reflecting or contemplating.

They are arranged in a similar manner to that of the Parthenon. You can look at the monument itself on the rock through the glass walls and see the original location of the sculptures .

(what you see in the museum here is a combination of the original parts of the sculptural decoration with copies of those in the British Museum, the Louvre, etc.)

The sculptural decoration of the Parthenon was made by the sculptor Phidias in collaboration with famous artists using marble from the nearby mountain of Penteli.

There are 92 metopes

(slabs with reliefs of mythological representations on the frieze of the outer colonnade). They depict:

East -> The Gigantomachy

Western -> The Battle of the Amazons

North -> The Fall of Troy

South -> The Centaur battle

The most famous sculpture of the festival of the Panathenaeans (festival in honour of Athena every 4 years).

In the eastern one we observe the gods Poseidon, Apollo, Artemis, Aphrodite, Eros

THE PEDIMENTS

They are on the two narrow sides of the monument in the triangular space created by the cornices of the roof

The East pediment depicts:

The birth of Athena from the head of Zeus (and the Sun rising with its tetrapod from the sea)

The western pediment depicts:

Athena and Poseidon conflicting over the protection of Athens.

It is worth seeing the ornament which was on the roof over the western pediment. Take a photo of it, too!
