A tragic hero is someone who reaches fame, but then he or she leads himself to downfall. Throughout history there have been many examples of these, including the Hall of Fame boxer Mike Tyson. Same as all tragic heroes; Tyson had a moment of glory when he became a boxing champion, but then he led himself into a spiraling downfall. The tragic hero Mike Tyson, and the protagonist from Shakespeare's tragedy, Hamlet share several characteristics as the two of them have convoluted personalities.. They are both effusive people that can't handle their feelings and react in extreme and flagrant ways because of it. Another trait they both share is that they have a superfluous mentality; they always want to do more than what they are expected to. The similarities between Mike Tyson and the tragic hero from Hamlet highlight the athlete's tragic flaws. He was responsible for all of his flaws and crimes including being convicted for rape and for biting an opponent's ear off during a fight, but the media was responsible for giving this person a different character and personality. Cable and newspapers used Mike Tyson's inability to control himself to their benefit without any kind of mercy.

Due to the flaws Tyson had, he can be easily compared to the protagonist from Shakespeare's play, Hamlet. One of the characteristics these both people share is their impulsive an unstable ways of thinking. For instance, Mike Tyson demonstrated these features in the match he lost against Holyfield; in the other hand, Hamlet showed it in his famous to be or not to be soliloquy: "To be, or not to be - that is the question: whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer"(Act 3, Scene 3, Pg. 3). In this soliloquy, Hamlet highlights his desires of committing suicide as he is asking the question of whether to exist or not to exist. Moreover, Shakespeare uses Hamlet’s inner thoughts as a technique to show that Hamlet is in a state of quandary in whether to kill himself or not. This hasty and deranged expression is the perfect way of showing the properties of the character's mindset and his comparison towards Mike Tyson. As the soliloquy portrays, both characters have unsteady minds and this is the main reason of why Tyson loses his control in his match against Holyfield.

Tyson was convicted of rape and was sentenced to six years in prison. He was arrested in July, 1991 after 18 year old Desiree Washington accused him for sexual assault. He is also known for biting an ear off from Holyfield, one of his fighting opponents. Everyone has flaws, but due to social media, some people have to suffer more from their mistakes than others. A perfect example of a person who had to suffer more is the venerated and exemplary boxer Mike Tyson. After his incorrigible act and other heinous crimes, most of the medias were writing about him and giving him a horrible character and made up personality. For example, one of The Telegraph articles described Mike Tyson as an "apocalyptic tornado of testosterone, self-disgust and savagery." This is the perfect example of how media has gotten involved in a tragic hero's life and has worsened it even more.

Mike Tyson is a former professional boxer who fought between 1985 to 2005. He became the heavyweight champion and was the youngest boxer to win his category titles. He was a very dedicated and perseverant athlete who always aspirated to being the best of all. "I'm a dreamer. I have to dream and reach for the stars, and if I miss a star then I grab a handful of clouds" (Mike Tyson). This quote by Tyson shows how he always wants to improve himself and achieve his goals, but if he is not able to fulfill them, he at least tries to reach the closest to it. The fighter was at the peak of his professional career thanks to his values and morals, until his mistakes and the effects of the media combined to construct his downfall.

Mike Tyson, the stereotypical tragic hero lost his career due to his unstable mind and an obsession towards his sport. He could not maintain himself as being the champion since he smelled defeat in his fight against Holyfield and could not control himself. Then, the media took its position in the athlete's life and worsened the situation. His poor self-control caused by his first mistake and the media's reaction to it, caused him to erupt a couple of times afterwards. This period of his lifetime is like what Hamlet went through in Shakespeare's tragedy for they both share an obsession on something important in each other's life and a clear instability in their mindset. Mike Tyson was a victim of social media as well as many other famous people in the past and present. It has changed his personality and had made people think horrible and untrue things about him.
