I have always had a strong passion for people development, I recall the story of one supervisee whom I helped to embark on a job expansion journey. ''inspired by my supervisor'', as he always says, he applied positive thinking as a strategic approach to professional ambitions. throughout his career with us, he shifted from a demotivated rigid personality to an excellent team player with success-oriented mindset. What kept in mind is how a positive attitude can be so contagious in small teams. Our team became so energetic and motivated in a short time, which increased efficiency.

I joined UNDP a year and a half ago, as Program and M&E specialist in the Health Team, managing a team of 6. Our team works closely with the Minister of Health and partners to end malaria and to strengthen health systems.

My strongest memory is seeing staff members that I hired, guided, trained are now successful and on international UN positions.

I have always been fascinated by the art of managing people—understanding their professional strengths and weaknesses, as well as their emotional well-being.

Early in my career, when I was introducing myself to a supervisee, I asked about her boundaries. She mentioned that if I could send a message, I should do so rather than call. I made a conscious effort to respect her preference, while remaining available for calls whenever she had questions. Although it was challenging to hear as a new manager, it ultimately helped improve our working relationship.

I joined this boot camp to deepen my knowledge of people management, learn from my colleagues about their successes and challenges, and enhance my experience as a manager.

Our unit is consisted of multi professionals working in different areas of administration and logistics within the country office supporting program and project implantations in Yemen.

I am eager to learn more throughout the different interactive modules of the bootcamp to enhance my leadership and people management skills to leverage the efficiency of doing our work in the unit.

This is Joseph from UNDP Tanzania. I am currently managing an exciting initiative known as FUNGUO Innovation Programme (funguo.org) with a team of 8.

Why did I join the Bootcamp?

Well, we say people are the most valuable resources of any organization. They also happen to be the most interesting "species", and dealing with them requires us to always be at our best, with a variety of tools in our toolbox. So, I saw this as an opportunity for me to add a few more tools in my toolbox, by engaging with and learning from experts and peers from their experiences.

My strongest memory as People Manager?

Crashed expectations (talk of naivety?) - As an inexperienced Team Lead, I expected everyone to know what their roles were and be dedicated to them, as I thought everyone was driven. Well, I had this one team member (who was supposed to be more experienced) who would come in and just sit around, read newspapers, go out, and literally do very little. I had just joined a donor-funded project which was under Performance Improvement Plan, meaning it was on the verge of being closed down for poor performance, and I expected everyone to be worried as they would lose their jobs. When I finally gathered the courage and confronted him, it didn't go very well (maybe partly due to how I handled it - I was still a novice in leadership). Later on, I consulted with my Boss, and we found out that the role that team member was placed in wasn't really where he was supposed to be. We moved him into another position, and his performance was greatly improved. That was 9 years ago, and we are still friends after the end of the project.

My strongest memory as people manager

When I was heading Open Society Foundations country office in Guinea. I had to close down the office during COVID breakdown (2020) and had to manage team's fears, anxieties as part of the transformation process. It made me grow in many different ways.

My strongest memories evolve by the day in dealing with interpersonal relationships and conflicts between colleagues brewing from either ignorance of the policies, show of power or otherwise, but it is daily management of different issues. The good side is we have a good feedback mechanism that supports managing individual expectations versus organization goals.

I look forward to a successful bootcamp and wish colleagues the best.

In my work now and before, I have to deal with management issues and interact with people. So, in this bootcamp, I hope to learn how to be more effective and useful in my work in my managerial tasks and in my approach of managing other people, helping them to achieve their best results.

My name is Sarthak Mahajan, and I am a Non-Life Actuary Specialist at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in India. I currently lead the Actuarial & Data Analytics Division for the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), which is the world's largest crop insurance scheme.

I am Forward Mudzimu , A PSM Manager with the UNDP Zimbabwe office

Working oh health related issues and building resilience systems for Health in the country.I joined UNDP 4 years ago as an IC focussing on Health Products Supply Chain Oversight but later became the Procurement Manager overseeing a total of more than 15 direct and indirect supervisees. with this role l would like to learn how l can manage and work seamilessly with all these and others who are interact with who are in New York , India ,Copenhagen ,Malaysia ,Ethopia and other countries where there are regional Hubs for UNDP.Hoping to gain people management skills ,time management , ethical support and supervision and seamless oversight.I had had difficult supervisee -supervisor conflicts which escalated to some Perfomance Improvement Plans and this was not quite accepted by the supervisee

I am a strong believer in the power of technology and how it can break barriers to provide growth opportunities to all. My job involves working with Governments, private sector corporates and underserved segments to bridge the digital financial inclusion gap, and I am very passionate about the impact it can create!

I have been in people management roles for past several years when I worked with private sector and also with the World Bank Group. I look forward to benefitting from UNDP's people management tools/ trainings and learning from each other's experiences. Excited to be here with you all :)
