World´s longest sea crossing: Hong Kong Zhuhai bridge opens;
Chinese president XI jinping has offically opened the world's longest sea crossing bridge, nine years after construction first began. the bridge spans 55km (34miles) and connects Hong Kong to Macau and the Mainland Chinese city of Zhuhai. The bridge cost about $20bn and should have opened in 2016. Construction has been dogged by safety issues at least 18 workers have died the project, officials say. What's so special about this bridge? Designed to withstand earthquakes and typhoons, it was built using 400,000 tonnes of steel, enough to build 60 Eiffel towers. Why has it been built? It is part of China's plan to create a greater Bay Area, including Hong Kong, Macau and nine other cities in Southtern of China. This Area is currenntly home to 68 million people. In the past, travelling between Zhuhai and Hong Kong would take up to four hours - the new bridge cuts this down to 30 minutes. Can anyone drive to across the bridge?] No, those who want to cross the bridge must obtain special permits, allocate by a quota system, and vehicles will pay a toll. The bridge is not served by public transport, so private shuttle buses will ply the route. Authorities iniatially estimated that 9,200 vehicles would cross the bridge every day. Special cameras will be on the look-out for drivers on the bridge, who show sighs of getting sleepy, among other checks. The systems is really interesting and sofisticated because to help counter potential terror attacks and though many workers have given the life for this project, of it is sure that is is going to be a guaranteed bridge.

Colombia discovers the art of keeping young people off the streets.
After a failed peace pact raised the spectre of gaing violence, music and dance have thrown the youth of Colombia's Choco region a lifeline since April, Cuesta, a key figure in the peace talks, has languished in the deprived colombian city's over populated Anayancy Prison alongside a dozen other ex-gang leaders. Cuesta was once on track to realising his dream of becoming a professional footballer, until life took a turn for the worse and he resorted to criminal activity to make a living. "The peace process has no future here, reflects the 29 year old, under the watccful gaze of guards. The problem is not unusual in colombia where the bogota government has struggled to enforce a national peace accord in parts of the country where it holds little sway. Quibdó, however, has previously bucked that trend. The city, where the autohorities struggle to provide basic services, has long felt abandoned by the state. Now they find their reconciliation proccess threatened by the same question: rocking colombia as a whole: How Should gang memberswho agree to turn in their arm account for their crimes? The Quibdó pact, signed in september, was an attempt to lower the crime rate before Chocó's famus San Pablo festival. the gangs agreed to lay down their weapons in exchange for the promise of access to education and work opportunities. murder rates and vandalism dropped dramatically. Since the signing of Colombia's peace accord with the revolutionary armed forces of Colombia in late 2016, a power vacuum has been created in areas where the guerrillas desmobilised, allowing criminal armed groups to expand. amid the renewed violence, he wanted to try find a way to stop young people from joining gangs. Calderon hit upon the idea of using funds from academic project to create a workshop involving colombian artists and musicians with the help of Mr. Klaje, a colombia music group who create instruments from recycled materials and a group of artists from fundación casa tres patios en medellin a week -long workshop was held in late april. many of the workshop attendees told of their childhood in Chocó region.

Floyd Mayweather reveals his easiest opponent - and it's not Conor McGregor
Mayweather stopped the Irishman in 10 rounds last year, but claims he has had easier nights Floyd Mayweather has claimed Canelo Alvarez was his easiest opponent after the Mexican signed a record $365million deal with broadcaster DAZN. Mayweather outpointed Canelo in 2013 to take his record to 45-0 and would go on to win another five fights, including one against Conor McGregor who he stopped in 10 rounds last year. Canelo recently signed an 11-fight deal with DAZN that will reportedly make him the highest-paid athlete in the world. But Mayweather took a swipe at his old rival, writing on Instagram : "It didn't matter if Canelo ate his PED steak or not this night, this was by far the easiest fight of my career! "Connor McQuitter was a way better fighter than Canelo's cheating ass and I beat the brakes off him too! It takes me 36 mins or less to make $300m plus. It literally takes me one night and one fight to make what you might make in five years and 11 fights! So really, who's still winning? You do the math!" Mayweather retired for a second time after his fight with McGregor but could return to the ring on New Year's Eve and then again next year in a rematch with Manny Pacquiao. But Canelo insists it is he who deserves a second shot. "He wants to continue hurting boxing by making fights that don't make sense... and not giving boxing the credibility it deserves," he told TMZ. "If he wants to return, I ask him to look my way to give a great fight to the fans [...] Let's do the second fight. It's very important. We have something pending there, so let's make the second fight." Mayweather has also 'accepted' a fight with UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov after the Russian called him out following his own win over McGregor

“It was horrible before, terrible” Angelo Yepes says. “You couldn’t go out at night, you couldn’t sleep, because there might be shooting. I was too afraid to let the children go to school.”

She holds out her hands at right angles to her body, to show the tremors she still has – the result of years living in terror on a street dominated by violent armed gangs.

Four years ago, Buenaventura found itself in the international spotlight after it was billed as the country’s most violent city. A Human Rights Watch report revealed how powerful successor groups of paramilitaries were terrorising poor neighborhoods. Abductions and disappearances were widespread, and many people were driven from their homes.

The groups also restricted the movements of locals, recruited their children and forced small businesses to pay extortion money. Resistance was met with horrific acts of violence.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights granted precautionary protection measures to the families of Buenaventura and ordered the Colombian state to adopt measures to safeguard their lives. They were granted 24-hour protection.

Today, the results of this unique experiment are clearly visible. Two police officers sit at a table at the entrance to the street, while an armed soldier in fatigues leans against a wall further up, chatting to residents. As children play happily on the street, well after dark, young residents are gathered under a makeshift wooden shelter near the water’s edge, playing cards and dominos. Locals have begun to invest in their homes. Some of the wooden and corrugated iron shacks have been replaced with brick and cement buildings, and one house boasts an extravagant spiral staircase.

https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2018/oct/01/it-was-horrible-before-locals-safe-haven-deadly-colombian-city-buenaventura

Mexico has sent hundreds of police to its southern border as a caravan of thousands of Central American migrants approaches from Guatemala.

The move came after President Donald Trump threatened to use military force to completely close the US-Mexico border over the issue.

He also said aid could be cut to countries allowing the caravan to pass.

The group of Salvadoreans, Hondurans and Guatemalans say they are fleeing violence and poverty.

Mexico's main reaction has been to step up security on its southern border with Guatemala. Hundreds of federal police officers and immigration officers have been sent to the porous border region along the Suchiate River which divides the two neighbours.

In part, the response is intended to both dissuade the migrants from even attempting to enter Mexico and potentially to show the Trump administration that Mexico is willing to, as the government put it, "maintain order".

Beyond that, this situation catches Mexico at a strange time. One administration, that of President Enrique Peña Nieto, is leaving office and the new one, of President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, isn't yet through the door.

Migrant caravans of this type are nothing new, they quite often take place. However, this one, coming as it does so close to the US mid-term elections in November, has taken on a highly political dimension, to that point that President Trump has threatened to use the military and close the US southern border.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-45910779
