We talked earlier about poetic imagery when we looked at Borderlands. Poetic imagery is when the author is able to use their words to create an image in your mind. The author uses descriptive language to help you see, feel, taste, smell, and touch the setting or sometimes even mood of their writing.

Good poetic imagery uses a variety of other poetic devices to help create those images. Onomatopoeia is a poetic device where the words are also sounds. Think comic books: BAND, POW, ZOOM! Using onomatopoeia creates a rich image for the reader. 

Take a look at Veriedad Musical. This poem is about music.

The author uses a variety of modern language, slang, and mixes Spanish and English. This could be called Translanguaging. We talked about translanguaging a little bit when we read The Color of My Words. Translanguaging is when an author uses multiple languages in one sentence. Some say that "Text Speak" is it's own type of language. It has it's own rules and patterns. Take a closer look at Valentine Texts.

Remedios y Rarezas
Remedios y Rarezas is written as a senryu. A senryu is a a 3-line unrhymed Japanese poem that usually has a humorous (funny) element. Additionally, this poem focuses on the superstitions each family and culture have.

A metaphor is a regularly used poetic device that compares two unlike things WITHOUT the use of "like" or "as." There are many reasons an author may use a metaphor. 
  1. The author may want to point out how alike the two things really are or how different they really are. 
  2. The author may use the metaphor to create rich poetic imagery. 
  3. The author may use the metaphor to explain something in their poem. 
These are just some possibilities.

In "Spanish Birds", Bowles uses man metaphors. Take another look at the poem.

Mis otros abuelos
"Mis otros abuelos" is a concrete or image poem. This is a poem where the author uses the words in some way in order to create an image. There are many examples. If you are interested, Google "Concrete Poems" or "Image Poems" for more examples.

Take a look at "Mis otros abuelos." 
  1. What do you notice about how the poem looks? Specifically look at the lines and how they are purposefully written.
