1. Take the Reading Seriously (Even If It’s Not Your Thing)

You’ll probably read some books and short stories that are older or feel kind of slow at first but don’t write them off. Try to think about why the story was written, or what it says about people or the world. That mindset helps with essays, class discussions, and actually makes the reading more interesting.

2. Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute to Write Essays

I learned this the hard way writing takes time. Start early, get feedback if your teacher offers it, and revise. Even if writing isn’t your favorite thing, your effort really shows, and teachers notice that.

3. Speak Up in Class (Even If You’re Not 100% Sure that goes for any class!)

Sometimes the best discussions come from someone asking a question or giving a different opinion. Plus, participation usually counts toward your grade. You don’t have to be perfect just be involved.

4. Vocabulary and Grammar Actually Matter

It might feel boring or extra, but learning how to write and speak clearly will help you in every subject, not just English. Take the grammar stuff seriously it really does make your writing stronger.

5. Ask for Help If You’re Stuck

No shame in not getting something right away. I had questions too ask your teacher or even classmates. It shows you care, and that alone puts you ahead.

You’ve got this. English 9 isn’t about being perfect it’s about learning to express your thoughts, ask good questions, and understand the world a little more through what you read and write. Don’t stress too much, just stay consistent.
