Definition:
The reason for belief, Unexplained, is trying to make sense of something that has happened or is happening in one’s life. Even though it seems so far-fetched, individuals will always try to make sense of something that seems impossible.

Connection:
The Oak Island Treasure some would call an unexplained phenomenon. In Nova Scotia, there exists a hole in the ground that no one reportedly has been able to navigate done far enough to find anything substantial. The hole appears to have been man-made, but the technology to do so wouldn’t take sense based on its origins. There is reportedly treasure at the bottom, but it is thus far a mystery.

Definition:
The red flag, Confirmation Bias is looking for evidence to affirm one’s values and beliefs. It involves interpreting and experiencing information to confirm one’s values and beliefs while ignoring other supporting possibilities.

Connection:
The picture shows that from the words you use to search on the internet, would usually agree with your points. The first few links in the search would give information that would reaffirm your values, while disregarding or adding few other possibilities to the articles.

Definition:
The red flag, Proof of Verbosity is displaying loads of information to make something look difficult to understand. It makes use of words and data that can be hard to comprehend so individuals usually accept it for what it is due to information being displayed seems genuine.

Connection:
The use of fake science and the placebo effect to influence people to spend money on something they really don’t need is rampant. Originally, scientists figured out that consumers would purchase anything if it sounded correct and scientific: thus the inception of vitamin supplements that human really don’t need. This video example explains this in a humorous and lighthearted way, but also hits on important points.

Definition:
The red flag, Appeal to Authority involves using other individuals ‘authority’ to explain and support a claim in which they have no expertise in. This usually involves celebrities and doctors that allows them to use their popularity and background to support claims.

Connection:
This article outlines a list of people who have endorsed Bernie Sanders for the democratic nomination, and with their influence tried to get others to do the same. Even though celebrities like Will Ferrell have no more of an understanding about politics than any other average citizen, him being famous alone will cause regular citizens to think differently.

Definition:
The red flag, Confusion of Correlation with Causation explains just because one incident happens does not mean the next incident is the result of the first one. There is often more variables happening which causes said incidents to occur.

Connection:
This digital comic explains Correlation and Causation quite well. It shows that he falls for the red flag by referring to it, and then understands the difference between them. Finally, the punchline of the comic is him refuting the causation even though it is accurate in that case.

It aims to distract from the main issue or argument at hand with information that has no impact or relevance.

Connection:
This article outlines one of the current issues surrounding the Trump administration in the United States; distracting the American people from the darker problems associated with him. In this example, Trump is using a voter fraud excuse to take away from the fact that Russia could have been manipulating Trump and the presidential election.

It is used to shape their mentality when approaching topics.

Connection:
Black Lives Matter is an ideological movement which is meant to help stop violence and racism towards black people. This movement has gained a lot of traction on the left leaning political activists, but has also gained negative traction with members being black supremacists; which is when their ideology goes too far.

Definition:
The reason for belief, Patternicity, involves forming patterns to objects to something that is recognizable to an individual.

Connection:
This example of patternicity places a very popular internet celebrity, once known as Harambe the gorilla, in the shape of a Cheeto, or so the founder believes. This is not the first time a person or thing has been seen in a food product, but in this case many other people must have seen it as well… since it sold for $100,000 USD.
