Mercurio de Cellini was a sculpture built in 1545 in Italy by Benvenuto Cellini, an italian sculptor who lived in Florence in the 16th century.

In the renaissance it was very common to see sculptures related to the greek mythology. In this case, the sculpture is dedicated to show the power of the Medici in the city of Florence. The work represented the triumph of the good works (from the government of the Medici) against the devil (their opponents)

The sculpture represents harmony and balance. We can also appreciate the anatomy’s precision, because it is very well distributed. This was a renaissance tendency that differed from the Middle Ages sculpture, which was less proportionate in terms of human anatomy, mainly due to the classical influence.

It was made out of bronze, a material that was used a lot in the renassaince’s sculptures, a material which Benvenuto Cellini liked to work with.

Angeles Carrasco

This sculpture was built between 1480 and 1488 in honor of the Condotierro Bartolomeo Conlleoni by Andrea del Verrochio who lived in Veneto,Italy.

Is a reinassence sculpture, located in Italy, dedicated to the ex Captain General of the Republic of Venice. This types of sculptures, honnored to an important leader, are called Condotierro because the people represented put themselves in the services of a city or lord and attributed important things to the history of a city…

The author of the sculpture faced some problems, as pretending that the horse was moving with a raised leg because this could cause stability problems, but he was the first one to solve this problem.

The sculpture was made in bronze,a material used a lot in that times. We can appreciate the movement represented in the statue and the facial expression of Conlleoni that shows anger and reflects the problems and crisis the cities were suffering, after the french invassion, which you can also sense in the muscles of the horse and the neck of the rider since they are both very tense. The point of view of Conlleoni is represented turning his torso to the right contrasting his legs that are facing forward and his head facing left.
Aya Aztout

This painting was painted by Leonardo da Vinci,a florentine polymath of the Italian renaissance.
Leonardo took 3 years to paint it between 1495-1498.He used tempera, gesso, mastic and pitch.Duke Ludovico commisioned the painting in Milan.Representing the last supper of Jesus and his disciples.Located in Santa Maria delle Grazie.
The most important moment of this painting,is that shows the commandment of Jesus, remembering what he was going to do in favour of all humanity, putting his blood on the cross, paying for our sins.
We could say that the most dominant colors in this painting are the red that appears in all the clothes and a little bit in the architecture of the scene, and the subordinated colors are the black and white used only for the ilumination and shading of the painting. The point of view of Leonardo was to emphasize the importance and the central position of Christ.
The figures are represented by the Apostles that are in groups of 3 and the shape of Jesus looks like a triangule. They all wear red, blue and green robs.Da Vinci wanted to make a realism in his work, having a human and emotional scene.
The iconography of The Last Supper takes form of 3 scenes, the washing of the feet of the Apostles, the discovery of the treachery of Judas and the Communion of the Apostles.
Cora Ruiz

This sculpture was built between the years 1513 and 1515 comisioned by the Pope Julius II for his tomb it depicts the biblical figure Moses with horns on his head.
This sculture was created by the famous artist called Miguel Angel (Michelangelo Buonarroti) located in the church of San Pietro in Vincoli in Rome.
The initial design by Michelangelo was massive and called for over 40 statues. The statue of Moses would have been placed on a tier about 3.74 meters high, opposite a figure of St. Paul. In the final design, the statue of Moses sits in the center of the bottom tier.
This work is built up of marble and it had been used the typical style used in the Renaissance. Seated in a serious attitude, he rests with one arm on the tablets, and with the other holds his long glossy beard, the hairs, so difficult to render in sculpture, being so soft and downy that it seems as if the iron chisel must have become a brush. The beautiful face, like that of a saint and mighty prince, seems as one regards it to need the veil to cover it, so splendid and shining does it appear, and so well has the artist presented in the marble the divinity with which God had endowed that holy countenance.
Jesús Batista

Venus & Marte de Botticelli

Venus and Mars was painted in the year 1483, in full swing and creation of the Renaissance. By the Italian painter Sandro Botticelli. Painter, born in Florence, Italy. This illustrious painter died on May 17, 1510 in Florence. Currently located at the National Gallery, London. It has a renaissance style. Also this work is believed to have been dedicated to the Italian Vespucci family, because to the right of it you can see some wasps, which were the coat of arms of this Italian family. And it has characteristics of 69cm x 1.73m, and was painted with tempera paint. In the 15th and 16th century it was very common for artists, be they sculptors or painters, to make works related to Greek mythology. With the Greek gods or with mythological heroes such as Perseus or Hercules. Two of the most important Greek gods, Venus (Aphrodite) and Mars (Ares), are represented in this work. You can see the goddess Venus relaxed, next to the god Mars much more relaxed than her. You can also see some satyrs, which were male creatures with a human half and a hairy and grotesque half that appeared wandering through the forests in Greek mythology, bothering Mars, grabbing his weapons, his armor and there is even one of these that is touching a kind of shell in his ear, but he is too relaxed to give importance to that. The myth represented by this work is that of the love affair between Venus and Mars. It is about how Venus was forced to marry the god Vulcan (Hephaestus) and while she was married to Vulcan she had a secret affair with Mars. This work makes you first look at Venus, which is relaxed. Then you look at the satyrs with the spear, who take you to Mars. And at the end of the tour you look at the last satyr under Mars which takes you out of the painting. This work isn´t a realistic painting.
But in conclusion, i think this work represents not only marriage, it also represents how love can overcome or defeat hate or war.
Nicolás Rolla

Venus of Giorgione

Venus was a painting that was painted, between 1507 and 1510 by Giorgione, and then it was completed and partly repainted by Tiziano arond 1511-1512 after the Giorgione death, who lived in Venecia, Italy. He lived at the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th. Giorgione was one of the founder of the modern painting.
It is a renaissance paint, and like many paintings of this movement, it make reference to the Greek mythlology, wich made that this paint is a idealistic drawing, with all the ideal woman characteristics. In this case is the goddess of the love, Venus wich has influenced to many painters like Tiziano, Velazquez and Rubens, even modern painters like Manet. This paint was for a private collector. The purpose of this drawing was that the buyer could admire this artwork.
It was painted with oil, because the technique that was used was the oil on canvas.

It was firtly exibited at Casa Marcello in Venetia. Now it is exhibited in Gemaldegalerie Atle Meister of Dresde, in Germany.
This drawing is made by brushstrokes, because for Giorgione, the color was more important than the drawing. The color technique, give volume and depth to the paint.
In this artwork, the point of view is the same than the painter, near the women, seeing all the landscape. The perspective, make that Venus is clearly seen, and make a contrast with the scenary. With this perspective, Georgine gives depht to the painting. Respect to the light, it comes from the right, and it hits all the body of Venus, wich resalt it's beauty and it's white skin, wich is one of he beauty ideals of the renaissance. Her clothes, that are laid out in the floor, indicates that is in the Greek or Roman time.
Respect how the look runs in this painting is: fist you look to the face, secondly, to her underarm because she is looking to it, then it follow all the body and finally the landscape because her position accomapnies the landscape that serves as background. The landscape is very well painted. Venus and the background are unified. Her position, is well thinked, because, her right arm, show her underarm, wich is sign of the femenine sex, while the left hand is on her pubic region. Also the curves of the landscape enforce the women ones.
In this composition, Venus have a distanced look, wich is for no to made that the spectator feel incommoded, and is a simbol of submission. A excepcion, is that the picture was painted with cool colours, wich wasn't the normal in this theme. Her position is a little rigid.
Painting a naked women in the nature, is considered the start point in the modern art.
In my opinion, Giorgione was an important painter, but the lack of kwnoledge, have led that he haven't the recognition that he should have, and respect to the artwork, I think is very well achieved, and the position, the light and the landscape make all perfect.
Made by Carlos Armero

Andrea del Verrocchio was a painter, sculptor and four-piece Italian goldsmith. He worked at the court of Lorenzo de' Medici in Florence. Among his students, we can distinguish some of them, for example, Leonardo da Vinci and Sandro Botticelli, but he also influenced Michelangelo. He worked in the classical style of the first Florentine Renaissance.

He sculpted David of Andrea del Verrocchio, which is a bronze statue, which was probably constructed between the years 1473 and 1475.

The statue represents the youthful David, future king of israeli people, in a victorious pose with Goliath’s head next to his feet. He has a hand placed over his waist, in the other one, he is holding a sword and it presents his legs arched. It doesn’t show any kind of movement, but instead we can appreciate that not in the actual face, but by his position, we can deduce he is trying to show some kind of victorious expression.

This statue was installed initially in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence in 1476, but now, it is actually located at Bargello Museum in Florence.

It was an order from the Medici family, which also commissioned the project.

It’s an aisle work sculpture.

Verrocchio mastered the techniques of marble carving and bronze casting. Marble offered an ideal medium for tombs and portrait busts, while cast bronze proved exceptionally strong and durable, permitting the artist to conceive dramatic figures of impressive size and freedom of movement. This sculpture uses the bronze casting technique.

It would be an idealistic figure for godless people, but for religious Christian people, it could be a realism sculpture, if we took into account that Goliath’s death against David was an actual event for Christians.

This figure could be seen from different points of view, because of its 3D construction.

In conclusion I consider this piece of art to be a very exceptional work from Verrocchio, symbolizing the power of David's victory over Goliath.

Sergio Martínez

Secondly It's the first time that an sculture doesn't need an architectural framework to support itself so that's why it makes it really important.

This work interprets the biblical theme of David and Goliath. Goliath was a giant who had everyone terrified and David defeated him. Then, he took the sword of the giant himself and cut off his head, which we can see it under Donatello's feet.
It's an aisle work and it doesn't show any movement but we can observe that the the position of David represents his pride after his winning.

It has a complicated technique that was already used in the classical world. The
Renaissance recovered the use of metal. For the creation process he had to make a mold and pour the molten bronze into it. Once the molten metal has been filled, wait for it to cool down before break the mold that covers it. Lastly, he will polish the surface and refines details such as hair, eyes, etc.
Basically this realistic work is characterized by being very natural, by presenting the resulting sculpture in which the bronze represents that the softness of the skin causes the body to look like a feminine one. Also it can be saw from other sides so it has different points of view and David's face expresses a little happiness and serenity after the victory and contrasts with Goliath's face since it represents more marked features.

In conclusion, I think that this sculpture is interesting as the features are not really marked and I also like that this sculpture has many contrasts.I really learnt a lot about how all the features of this sculpture were made and I also liked it because I have learned how to do an analysis of a sculpture.

Laura Acero :)

When part of it collapsed in the 16th century, a council of a hundred people including many architects appointed Andrea Palladio to rebuild it. Andrea Palladio was an important Italian architect of the Republic of Venice. He worked mainly in the city of Vicenza and its surroundings. He was a great architect. The arches of the Basilica are semicircular arches supported by columns, the arches are all the same, what changes is the space inside them. The columns of the façade, as I have said before, hold the arches which are doubled towards the interior to form a cannon dome and finally the building is made up of two floors.

Leonardo was born the 15th of April of 1452 in Italy.

This painted have a Renaissance style and it is made with oil paint. Researches said that the painting was commisionated by the Duke Ludovico Sforza, who asked Leonardo for a portrait of his lover.
Actually "La Dama del Armiño" is located in the museum Czartoryski in Poland.
the technique used for the realization of this painting is oil and tempera.

It represents the seventeen yars old Cecilia Gallerani, the dukes lover and a woman of great beuty and intelligence, the lady is holding and caressing an ermine in her hands, represented vividly and accurately, this animal was associated with aristocrazy.
Leonardo drew her half-lenght in half profile perspective, this was new in this time and allowed Leonardo to give the composition greater dynamism and realism.
It is consider by the experts to be the first modern portrait, due to the fact that it is painted in three quarters and because the characters directs his gaze outside the painting, the animal also turns and seems to focus his gaze on someone outside.
It is a realistic painting and it is represented objectively and partially.

In conclusion, I will say that this work has a great story behind and it seems to me that Leonardo has managed to capture every detail very well and has done it in a very
realistic and perfectionist manner.

-Emma Bogonez.

Cristo Yacente was a painting painted between 1457-1501 by Andrea Mantegna, an Italian painter of the Renaissance.
He was one of the great innovator of the Western art, especially in the subject of perspective.

The painting was probably in Mantegna's workshop for about 30 years, which led to the belief that no one commissioned him so he painted it on his own.
Now, it is located in the Pinacoteca di Brera, in Milan.

It is painted with tempera, a technique in which the pigment solvent is water.

In this painting, the dead Christ appears resting on the marble. He is accompanied on his left by la Virgen María, San Juan Evangelista and María Magdalena, who cry his death. The faces of these three figures show a slight disproportion compared to their small hands, a detail that suggests the possibility that this was a later addition by the author.

In this case, the drawing is more important than the colors because the main thing in this painting is the body of Christ.

Mantegna painted an intense contrast of light and shadow transmitting enormous suffering in the painting.

Later, Christ is represented from the feet, with a direct point of view in an almost perpendicular way breaking with the perspective used by artists so far.

Finally, it highlights the anatomy of his body.
Also, the holes in Christ's hands and feets which are represented without idealism or rhetoric and the sheet covering the corpse. The sheet is painted in the same tones as the body which contributes to the overwhelming effect.

So we can say that Cristo yacente by Mantegna is a realistic painting.

In conclusion, I think is a different painting than the ones I have seen because of its perspective and also I have liked to learn about how to do an analysis of a painting.

- Sofia Lopez

The Expulsion Of Adan And Eva From The Eden is a fresco made by Tommaso di ser Giovanni di Mone Cassai, well known as Masaccio, it was one of the first paintings that represented naked bodies (this would change later in time, when it is ordered to cover the bodies with the leafs seen in the photo).

This fresco was sponsored by Felipe Brancacci with the building of the Brancacci Chapel in Santa Maria del Carmine, in Florence

The figures in the painting are deformed, they try to be realistic but are disproportioned as we can see for example in the arms of Adan

They had no clothes, that it was not common in that times, this is because Masaccio wanted a natural representation of the human bodies.

In the iconography we can see three people; Adan, Eva and an angel. We see Adan and Eva crying, as they have been expelled from the Eden because of the Original Sin, this is basically the main part of the painting. We can also see an arch, this arch is the entrance of the Garden of Delights, from where they are being expelled.

In conclusion, this painting represents the Original Sin and the consequences of it, with the desesperation of Adan and Eva as they are being expelled from the Garden of Delights.

In my opinion, this painting expresses very well the point of it, the saddness.

La capilla sixtina was painted between 1508 and 1512 by Miguel Angel, one of the most important painter, architect, and sculptor of the renaissance. In 1507 the Pope Julio II commissioned Miguel Angel this painting. It is considered an important piece as it was placed in the vault of the capilla of the Vatican palace. This painting is a fresco, that consists of covering the wall with plaster and several layers of lime and painting while the last layer is still wet.

The creation is divided in two stages. In the left side is represented the fall of the original sin, where Adam and Eva are expelled from paradise. In this side there are some important details, for example, we can see that Eva has just received an apple while Adam is also taking one. This symbolizes the banned fruit and the temptation of the forbidden. There is a snake offering the fruit, which in fact is a woman whose rings (orange, green and pink) means the natural attractive. It also represents Satanas, half woman, half snake.

In the right side is represented the expulsion. In the real story, they were represented with a feeling of embarrassment as they were expelled naked, so they tried to cover their bodies with fig leaves. However, the artist omitted this detail and painted their bodies naked and deformed to show their sadness. I also found interesting the fact that Eva is represented in muscular shape different and distorted from a woman’s figure.

In conclusion, I think it is an interesting creation as there are captured many stories and hidden meanings inside. This painting was so hard to made, as it was painted in the sealing, which is 20 meters high.

Blanca Prieto

I am going to talk about a sculpture of a man that is really important, for example he is the pattern of Cataluña this person is Saint George.

The sculpture of San George was made by Donatello it was ordered to decorate the external niches of the Orsanmichel church The area to place the statue was not easy: a corner with little depth and right next to the stairs but Donatello carved a perfect statue, the sculpture represents Saint George, this character is known for the legend of Saint George and the dragon in this story he fights the beast and win, but Donatello didn´t carve the statue like a hero, he represents the most humanistic side of the character.
San George was curved between the year 1415 and the year 1417, in the year 1558 someone threw a rock that broke the statue´s nose.
In the year 1892 The statue was moved to the Bargello museum of Florence, the story doesn´t end here, the statue was roved but in 1945 the recovered it and returned to the museum, where San George is now a days.

In conclusion this sculpture has a lot of history behind it, with characteristics that were not usual at that moment and the story of a great hero mith and represented by one of the best artists in history.
Pablo Muñoz.

The Brera Madonna Piero della Francesca

The Brera Madonna is a painting made by Piero della Francesca between the years 1472-1474 and is currently in the Pinacoteca de Brera of Milan. In fact, Napoleon himself put it there!
This painting includes a number details that only the keen and the knowledgeable could detect, and since that seems like a lot of work, I just looked it up:

1) The painting depicts the Virgin sitting in a chair and the sleeping child, which I am pretty sure will fall off her lap, while a combination of saints and angels surround them. In the right, you can observe condottiero Federico da Montefeltro kneeling.

2) In the exact center of the painting is the Virgin's head, which can be seen using equations and frighteningly complex geometry.

3)Condottiero Federico da Montefeltro is seen wearing his armor, which symbolizes his military prowess to defend his faith and is a new concept presented for when in the presence of a holy presence. They said I would never be able to put presence three times in a phrase.

4) The sleeping child (who will probably soon learn the horrors of gravity) is wearing a necklace made out of red coral, which signifies blood, which signifies both life and death, which signifies the redemption brought by Christ. It was also worn by babies.

5) If you were paying attention, you can see that the part of the ceiling that looks like a seashell has an ostrich egg hanging by a thread. It signifies the purity of the Virgin and also regeneration and inmortality. Now I feel guilty for eating an omelet yesterday

6) It was comissioned by Federico III da Montefeltro (Try saying that three times fast) to celebrate the birth of his son, Guidobaldo

7) If you pay attention, you can see that one of the figures is actually Luca Pacioli, a mathematician born in Sansepolcro, just like Piero della Francesca. I dare you to find him in the next ten seconds.

8) Some people say that the painting was actually comissioned due to the conquest of several fortresses in Marella. For some reason that sounds like a tuna can brand

In conclusion, The Brera Madonna Piero della Francesca is unique painting that blends new ideas for depicting faith, but also hides a complex mix of experiences and personal preferences that give it both matematical precision and mysterious aura, a true masterpiece of the renaissance. Or so the blurb on the back of the box says.

Danae by Tiziano

Danae is an oil on canvas painting made in 1545 by the Italian painter Tiziano Vecellio. It is preserved in the National Museum of Capodimonte in Naples. The painting is of Italian Renassaince style and was commissioned by the Bruise Alessandro Farnese.
This painting has been represented by several artists during fifteenth and sixteenth centuries . Over the years, Titian himself made several versions of this same theme. This one in Naples is the first one of this artist in which Titian paints a Danae in complete abandonment and satisfaction.
She is looking upwards, wrapped in a complacent shadow; the body is languid, and released, the legs, although covered by a flap, are open to receive the heavy fertilization.
Danae dazzles by its light, radiant in its beauty, and by the violent contrast that is underlined between the sheets of a white niveo against the dark background. A curtain, a resource used in all paintings, stands out in a foreground, which reinforces the sense of perspective, but in this case without abusing the intensity of color.the painting is therefore wrapped in a serene and graceful atmosphere because there are no strong rises in color, and danae, of an equally delicate beauty is soaked by the golden rain. In this case the iconography of the scene is complemented by a putti next to it that emphasizes the divine sense of the event.
X-ray examination of the painting revealed two sobering elements: the first is the lack of drawing underneath the painting. The exclusion of the preparatory drawing gives the painting a very particular colorist, almost impressionist connotation. The second element revealed by X-rays is that there is, below the visible, a primitive composition with chests and domestic, with an explicit call.

In conclusion this ìs a painting that is very sensual and has many versions one of them is in the Prado Museum.
María Rincón.

The portrait of Carlos V in Mühlberg is an “equestrian” portrait since he is riding a horse. It is also painted in oil on canvas by the Venetian painter Tiziano Vecellio in 1548. It measures 335 cm high and 283 cm wide.

It is currently exhibited in the Prado Museum in Madrid.

This portrait commemorates the victory of CarlosV against the Schmalkaldic League who opposed his imperial authority and defended Lutheranism.

It also shows the emperor riding a horse in front of the Elbe river, and behind him a big forest in dark tones, and the portrait is very detailed as you can see in the armor and horse.

It also can be appreciated how clean it is and that there are no blurs in the painting. Carlos’s face is shown as inexpressive and kind of calmed.

Also the patron was Carlos.
