The brain can be affected multiple ways when put into different environments. As a result the brain will grow or shrink in thickness in certain areas such as the cerebral cortex. When the brain is put into an environment of being considered 'enriched' it is found that the brain is thicker. While also being more capable of learning and is more susceptible to improved memory. Rather than if the brain is put in an 'impoverished' environment. In an impoverished environment the brain tends to be smaller and is seen affected by the environment.

Rosenzweig, Bennet, and Diamond (1972) experimented on rats in enriched and impoverished environments. The aim was to see whether environmental factors affect the development of the cerebral cortex in terms of weight and thickness of the brain. Rats in the enriched environment had thicker, heavier, and increased neurotransmitters in the brain. On the other hand, impoverished rats had less development in the brain. However, it was found that impoverished rats exposed to enriched conditions for 2 hours each day had the same brain plasticity as enriched rats. This shows that the former belief that the brain is fixed in weight is not true. This study is limited in that it has low generalization to humans.

Davidson found that Monks experienced in meditation and 2 volunteers had an increase of gamma waves during meditation. However, Davidson also found that gamma waves remained constantly high after meditation in monks. This shows that the brain adapts to stimulation from the environment and our own thinking.

Study conducted by Rosenzeig, Bennet, and Diamond wanted to investigate whether environmental factors affect neuron development in the cerebral cortex. It was found that when rats were put into an enriched environment, they had thicker and heavier cortexes. They were also able to increase their learning and memory ability. It was also found that rats that were originally in the impoverished environment only took two hours to adapt and have the same brain plasticity as those who were in their longer. This shows that the environment does have an effect on the brain and brain size can change.

It was found the hippocampus was smaller in participants with PTSD rather than the control group. Veterans w the worst STM had the smallest hippocampus. The length of sexual abuse correlates w memory probs/ smaller hippocampus. The study shows people with longer/ more severe trauma had the smallest hippocampus, correlating with their bad memory
