From Authorship to representation the entire subject has me fascinated. And every film buff needs a top Movie list of some kind. I will gradually form some sort of top list, perhaps as more of a 'Desert Island disk', rather than having a specific order.  My first of these fave's is Easy Rider (1969). I am drawn to i'ts cinematography, use of soundtrack and ultimately the alternative directing style used by Dennis Hopper, the film's director, star and co-writer. Along with producer and co-star Peter Fonda the 'Hollywood rebels' of the time created an independent master piece.

During a skill swap session on my PGCE course, I gave a brief introduction to the use of signs and symbols by the media to control, manipulate and evoke audience reaction. The example I used was the way newspapers use captions and headlines to manipulate images. I also informed the group of how music can be used to change the affect of a visual image. If I had had the time I would have shown a video of The Wizard of Oz (1939) accompanied by Pink Floyd's album Dark Side of the Moon (1973). It is also commonly used to refer to multiple single scenes within the film to represent the film. The arrangement of everything that appears in the framing – actors, lighting, décor, props, costume – is called mise-en-scène, a French term that means “placing on stage.” The frame and camerawork are also considered part of the mise-en-scène of a movie. In cinema, placing on the stage really means placing on the screen, and the director is in charge of deciding what goes where, when, and how. Travolta, an A list celeb, Therman a rising star appealing to large audience, which also helps with promotion.
LIGHTING: Three point lighting - back light, picking the characters out from the background, key spotlight on the stage highlighting the dancers and indicating the situation to the audience, fill light from the from ensuring the spotlight does not cast shadows during the dance sequence.
DECORE: 1950's design indicating the setting of the scene; a 1950's themed restaurant/club. Stage is circular and the ceiling opposes it with lots of symmetrical lines, perhaps representing the characters differences. The use of the colour blue could signify the characters moods.
PROPS: Masses of 50s memorabilia, posters, lights, furniture indicating where they are.
COSTUME/MAKE UP: The Characters are both in very sterile outfits consisting of black and white. Uma Therman's character also wears a wig perhaps indicating the discomfort with her own identity. She also has very little make up on , this indicates that she is not vain or self obsessed. She is more concerned with being comfortable. We also see this when both characters kick their shoes off.
