My book begins with a present day narrator (who we later find out is Jim Hawkins, the main character in the story), who tells us “Squire Trelawney, Dr. Livesey, and the rest of these gentlemen having asked me to write down the whole particulars about Treasure Island, from the beginning to the end, keeping nothing back but the bearings of the island, and that only because there is still treasure not yet lifted, I take up my pen in the year of grace 17--and go back to the time when my father kept the “Admiral Benbow” inn, and the brown old seaman, with the sabre cut, first took up his lodging under our roof.” This is a long quote which tells us a number of things right away. First of all, we learn that this narrator is writing down the story of an adventure of some sort with a certain “Treasure Island”, and that he cannot continue with anymore details because there is still valuables there. This foreshadows the adventure to come and gets the reader hooked right off the bat. Next we learn the narrator is presently 17, which means when this story took place when he was probably quite young considering what he was doing; probably around 12 or 13. This adds another element to the story before it even starts; it tells us that this hunt for treasure consists of most likely Dr. Livesey and perhaps Squire Trelawney, but also a young boy around 13 years old. Finally, the scene is set with the final part about the Admiral Benbow Inn, and a character known as “the brown old seaman” is introduced. This is a great way to transition from the present day back in time to when this story began. I really liked how the author started this book because it is different and creative. This glimpse into the present day also got me hooked on what exactly went down with this “Treasure Island”, and how an innkeeper's son ended up getting into all of it.

Important Quote

“Ah, said Silver, it were fortunate for me that I had Hawkins here. You would have let old john be cut to bits, and never given it a thought, doctor.
'Not a thought,' replied Dr. Livesey cheerily.” (188) This quote is important because it echos a theme which we find as the book goes on. It shows how Jim growing and helping out Long John Silver was so important and played a huge part in the story. If it weren't for Jim and his courage Silver would've died and so much would have been changed negatively at the end of this story.
