Albrecht Durer was born in Nurnberg, Germany on May 21, 1471. Durer was one of 18 other children, and he trained with his father as a goldsmith in his workshop. He convinced his father to work alongside Michael Wolgemut, which was a local painter and designer of woodcut book-illustrations. When he drew his first self portrait, (shown above) It was evident that he was going to become an artist. His portrait is considered beautiful by many, and shows his talent in the art field.

Albrecht Durer made lots of paintings during the Renaissance, but the one that stood out the most is his "Adam and Eve" painting, because many people consider this to be his best work. Durer mastered the art of making humans have perfect proportions, and he even published some of his findings and experiences in a book published in 1525. There are 4 animals hidden in this painting, which all symbolize the 4 temperaments. https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/336222

Another one of Durer's contributions to the Renaissance was woodcuts. Durer was a master of woodcuts, being one of the best during the time of the Renaissance. Many consider this woodcut, titled, the Four Horsemen, (carved in 1498) as the best woodcut made by Albrecht Durer. This is a very impressive and hard to master technique, as you have to carve out every single piece by hand. The four horsemen represent Pestilence, War, Famine, and Death. https://www.cooperhewitt.org/2017/08/14/the-four-horsemen

Durer's most famous copper engraving, Knight, was engraved in 1513. This type of art in among one of the hardest to master, as copper is a very tough metal that you have to carve through and there is no room for error. Copper engravings are also among some of the most beautiful forms of art, and Durer is considered one of the best in this challenging process. The knight that he painted is a fearless christian soldier, who has no fear of dying or the devil. The soldier shows bravery by fighting in the war.

https://www.brooklynmuseum.org/opencollection/objects/67926
