Role models: An essential part to anyones development in life. They are a guide for how one may think, act, and live. A hero for a child to look up to, who gives them hope for a brighter future. An inspiration to a young teen who is looking to be inspired when life seems mundane. A mentor through challenges that life throws at you. Without them, the world is a whole lot harder to figure out alone. They personally have been a huge influence on my life in the most positive way possible.

I really loved the interesting perspective my Dad had to offer about helping people in poverty. I think the main theme my Dad was driving home with this talk on humanitarianism organization is empowerment. This conversation made me realize how invested one must be to helping people less fortunate than you. My Dad gave a good example of working through local leaders in the community to teach people how to grow crops properly or irrigate water is way more beneficial than just sending food packages. In order really make an impact in their lives, you must be working to develop long term solutions for them instead of just short term.

My Dad originally was from Rochester, New York, but he grew up in Los Angeles for most of his early childhood. When attending the University of San Diego, he was the class president, and started a small business of note taking resources for students that is still around today. When going back to visit his old school, there was still a huge picture of my Dad hanging up in one of the school’s hallways. I remember looking at his picture and seeing him dressed up in his black suit and tie. His abundance of “beatles-styled” black hair that he had before half of it disappeared, but most importantly, his big smile. The smile of someone who knew that he had a great life ahead of him, and in fact, he did.

After graduating from UCSD, my Dad attended the University of Chicago to get his MBA. He then started working at small business companies at the lowest levels, but quickly worked his way up. Eventually he became a co-owner of an investment business, and retired early. As if this wasn’t impressive enough, after my Dad's retirement he decided to volunteer as a nonprofit humanitarian organization called Bright Hope. He has been working there since for 8 years now and loves it.

I have been fortunate enough to been able to grow up in a upper-middle class family and receive a great education. As a result, I have always felt that I need to contribute back to the world because I have the ability and knowledge to. This conversation has given me a new perspective and has given me a better idea of what I want to maybe do, and maybe the time is not now. Like my Dad, could pursue this aspiration later in life when I feel like I’ve gained enough knowledge and insight on the world because I am still young. All I know is that this is a path I want to go down.

I wanted to interview my Dad because I would like to eventually grow up to become as successful and respectable as him. I've always had aspirations to get involved with humanitarian organisations or something of similar intentions. As a result, I wanted to hear his perspective of working in this field, especially as someone coming from a different field beforehand because this was a jurassic job change for him.

Although this may sound very cliche or typical, my Dad has always been my number one role model in my life. Now I am not just simply saying this because he is my Dad, but I truly think he is an amazing, hard working, intelligent, and kind person. My Dad has always been the more active type, and he is always constantly working or doing something. However, it is rarely ever for himself. In fact, most of his time is dedicated to other people through family, work, and around the world even. There are so many people I know that deeply respect my Dad for his accomplishments and character. While I am not sure if this is necessarily true (but I would like to think so), my dad has help me develop the better part of myself and continues to push me to become the best person I can be.
