Joyce Kauffman is a lesbian who, in the 1980s, was desperate to be a mother. Together with a male friend and a turkey baster; she fell pregnant and gave birth to her daughter. There was a legal agreement in place with the biological father, however, no legal fallbacks for her same-sex partner at the time. When Kauffman and her partner broke up, her ex had no legal standing with the daughter they believed they shared. Thus, Joyce Kauffman, who had since become a lawyer, took to the courts to grant a three-way custody agreement, allowing whom she considered the other mother of her child legal guardianship, despite the breakup.

Video about adult adoption; the legal loophole that allowed same sex couples next of kin and child custody rights

This YouTube video is about the fascinating legal loophole often exploited by queer couples called adult adoption. The long and short of the arrangement is simple; one partner in a same-sex relationship legally adopts the other. Thus giving reassurance their partner would have legal footing over assets should the other die and giving legal documentation stating both parties are related to a child they may adopt. This is important for co-parenting as a queer couple as often one parent would have no guardianship rights over their own child and therefore could not make important decisions for the child such as medical intervention.
