The Mixxer for Online Language Exchanges

Matthew G.

What this is about: This article provides an update on the online website known as The Mixxer, a social platform that allows language learners to find virtual language partners to chat with. (The original article about this platform can be found here: https://fltmag.com/connect-students-native-speakers-today/) The site provides of the same functions as Facebook including the ability to add someone as a friend and send chat messages.

Read this if: You are interested in incorporating online language exchanges in your own (a)synchronous courses. Students can either use the text messaging system on the website to have a written exchange with a partner or they can exchange Skype information to conduct voice chat.

Personal anecdote: I have incorporated The Mixxer into my own classes so students can practice speaking the language. It is a free alternative to TalkAbroad; therefore, it lacks a lot of the nice features of that platform. Furthermore, unlike with TalkAbroad, it can be difficult to find a language partner right away on The Mixxer, so students may have to reach out to several people before they can find someone to complete their exchange with. However, I would still highly recommend it.
