For example in the book it states "suddenly, in spite of the heat in the carriage she shivered and wished she wasn’t going to the sea. A picture rose clearly before her mind. Cyril’s head, bobbing up and down, swimming to the rock... Up and down - up and down... " (Christie 5). This statement shows how maybe this tramatic incident for Vera will cause larger problems for her, or lead to her death. " He’d had a fancy lately that fellows were rather lighting shy of him. All owing to that damned rumor! By God, it was pretty hard - nearly thirty years ago now!" (Christie 9). Which could mean that the rumor might still be going around and something bad could happen to him because of it. So peaceful today - sometimes so cruel... The sea that dragged you down to its depths. Drowned... Found drowned... Drowned at sea... Drowned - drowned - drowned... "(pg 24). To me i think that Agatha Christie is using foreshawdoing here to tell us the reader that, this is how Vera might die or that something happened in her pass. For example, when Phillip Lombard is being introduced, he says, "You understand I can't undertake anything - illegal?", which shows he must have gotten into trouble with the law before. Also, on the last page of chapter one, when Mr. Blore is speaking with the old man, the old man states, "Watch and pray. The day of judgement is at hand." What's fascinating in this first chapter is that we're still seeing how all of these people are haunted by their history. Vera's memory flashes back to the scene of Cyril's drowning (chapter 1) Lombard, on the other hand, remembers that "legality has not always been a sine qua non" in his life (chapter 1) Macarthur bemoans the influence of a rumor related to an incident three decades ago (chapter 1) and so on. Some of these characters are somehow haunted. Wargrave, on the other hand, displays no remorse or regret which foreshadows his character later on with the murders. At the end of the chapter the line ""He's nearer the day of judgment than I am!"
