Life in East Germany

In East Germany people had to always watch their backs because there was always someone that was going to snitch. People in East Germany seemed to have it harder after the wall was built. Peoples families were split in half due to the Berlin Wall separating East and West Germany. The government only made things that people needed, cheap, but things that people could get as gifts were expensive. Most kids didn't have toys or just things to play with. There wasn't really anything to do except if you were wealthy and had cool gadgets to entertain. This is why life in East Germany. "The Stasi knew about me and Gerta the other night. They listen to everything we say in here." (Nielsen 57) This was from the day that Fritz returned after being taken in by the Stasi. He had to write it down so the Stasi wouldn't find out since they had bugged their house. "Sometimes we weren't joking, though. Sometimes we genuinely resented the life we were forced into." (Nielsen 64)

Life in West Germany was way different from East Germany. West Germany had more privileges than East Germany. There was even a viewing platform for West Germany to look down on East Germany. This shows how West Germany is more powerful than East Germany. In West Germany it seemed like the brighter side of Germany, people were wealthy over there, there were houses, and they had other things the Eastern Germany people didn't. In West Germany they had more opportunities since people were more wealthy and treated better. They had opportunities like having their own beliefs. They probably didn't have someones eyes piercing through their souls every second they walked outside either.

The Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall was built to separate East Germany from West Germany. This impacted families because now people in East Germany were trapped and most families were separated. Some people even called the wall a death trap. This was because if you get caught looking too long or doing signals at someone on the viewing platform then you could get taken in for questioning, even worse, death. Most family's were impacted heavily because loved ones were separated from each other. Some families could have elderly people that they have to check up on but now because of the wall, that's not an option. " It was Sunday, August 13, 1961, a day I would remember for the rest of my life. When a prison had been built around us as we slept." (Nielsen 1) This quote is from when Gerta woke up on the day the wall was built.

The setting in the book A Night Divided connects to Gerta's struggles and choices in the book because the setting plays a huge part in the book. If she were in West Germany, she probably wouldn't have needed to escape to a better life. In her setting, East Germany, it's a harsh environment that makes her have to tell lies, hide secrets, and pretend to be someone shes not. " Nothing in East Germany scares me more than the Stasi." (Nielsen 19) This quote shows the dangers lurking underneath the surface. The Stasi is a secret, powerful police force that are in East Germany and influence the choices that Gerta makes.

Restrictions in East Germany

In East Germany no one could speak freely because there own apartments the Stasi were always listening so is they so one bad thing it goes directly into their file that the Stasi keep for each and everyone who lives or lived n East Germany. Another restriction that people in East Germany had was that they didn't have accuse to fresh fruits and if they wanted to buy someone a gift it would be very expensive and only wealthy people could afford things like that. "Because those who get too curious about the other side sometimes get a taste of my bullets. Verstehst du?" (Nielsen 25) This quote is from Gerta was caught looking at her brother on the viewing platform and a soldier caught her.

1960s in the East vs. West

In the 1960s the East was a poorer country that was black and white literally and figuratively. In East Germany it was hard to have your own beliefs since everyone that was "loyal to the government" followed the government's beliefs. Most people in east Germany were probably not on your side. There was a large amount of people who gave the secret police force tips about people who could be up to "illegal business" This is why you always had to surround yourself with people who you trusted very very well. "We will never be able to leave, Mama said. The sooner you both accept that, the happier you will be." (Nielsen 16) Meanwhile the West had it great, people were wealthy compared to people in East Germany. People didn't have to worry about who they were telling things to, they didn't even have to worry about some strict police force that could take you in for the smallest things. The government in the West wasn't as strict and harsh as the East German government. Since there wasn't a "normal" way of life, people could do things freely and have fun without having to watch their backs. West Germany had it way better than East Germany.
