Citing Course Materials

Q: I would like to reference your online lecture slides/slideshow presentation in my paper, and I am struggling to find information to complete the citation. Is it correct to assume that you are the sole author?

A: I am the author of everything in the class, including the assignments, activities, and online lecture slides. For the purposes of a class, you can write in the text of a paper things like "as stated in our PR Careers Activity,...". It is not necessary to provide a full APA Style citation with dates, etc., for class materials within the context of coursework for that class.

Citing the Textbook

Q: Even though the textbook is not considered one of our required sources, do we still need to cite it?

A: Yes, you do need to cite the textbook in APA Style if you paraphrase or quote information from it.

A: It would be beneficial for you to practice citing any information you quote or paraphrase from the OOH in APA Style.

Q: Also, I am having trouble finding the job outlook for my specific area. Do we use the Projections Central website that is suggested by OOH and use Long Term Projections? Would that need a reference as well?

A: You will find short- and long-term projections by state at the Projections Central site link. If you quote or paraphrase information, you should cite it in APA Style.

Q: If we do need to cite, can we simply do a parenthetical citation? Or will a full reference be needed?

A: Citing a source always involves two steps: 1) Citing it in the text within parentheses at the end of the sentence before the period; and 2) Citing it completely on the References page. The citation within parentheses in the text is used to find the complete citation on your References page.

CH 2 PR Careers Activity

Q: At the end of step two for the PR careers activity we have to find a career we find interesting and compare it with the two other PR jobs. I just looked in the OOH and picked a job, but then I was not sure if I was suppose to pick a job from the article you posted in step 3. If you could just clarify for me if I can chose a job from OOH or if it has to come from the PR Career Guide: Public Relations Job Titles, Descriptions, & Salary article.

A: Points for completing Activities must be entered manually. You will see 0 points in "Grades" after successfully submitting it until it is graded.

Submitting & Resubmitting Activities

Q: I submitted an Activity but it looks like I didn't.

A: The Activities are set to allow unlimited resubmissions until the deadline. However, Brightspace is not capable of letting you edit your answers once they have been submitted. So, you must resubmit all your answers from scratch. Brightspace records each submission separately and keeps a record of your submission history. You can save and return to an Activity without submitting it.

REQUIRED ASSIGNMENT FORMATTING

Q: How should the Required Assignment be written and formatted?

A: Address each question thoroughly using complete sentences and paragraphs. Use APA Style to cite your sources and format your paper. You can use subheadings to organize your paper creatively based on the steps, questions, or comparing/contrasting, etc.

Q: I have completed the PR careers discussion but there is not a check next to it in Chapter-by-Chapter. Does this mean it was not successfully completed?

A: Your professor must manually check Padlet then record points earned in Brightspace, because Padlet is not directly connected to iLearn.

Q: Are the only Activities we have to submit on Padlet or in iLearn?

A: All Activities are posted in Brightspace under ACTIVITIES. Only certain steps of some Activities use Padlet, which is when you see a link to Padlet. Follow the Step-by-Step directions for each Activity in iLearn.

Posting on Padlet v. Brightspace

Q: Is there a difference between posting on Padlet and on Brightspace? Is the Padlet profile different from Brightspace?

A: Padlet is a separate external Internet-based app. Posting on Padlet is different than posting in Brightspace, and the Padlet profile is different from Brightspace.

A: Yes, they are! Descriptions, links for submitting, and helpful resources for completing all of your Assignments this semester are in Brightspace Content > ASSIGNMENTS.

No Forums - Comments/Padlet

Q: I see that there is not a forum section on the Brightspace taskbar. In a previous Brightspace online course I took there was a strong emphasis on forum entries so that we could converse with our classmates and share our questions or comments. I noticed there is a comment section available in the orientation link in order to introduce ourselves to the class. Will this be used in the future or will feedback be through assignments and the Q & A den?

A: Some Activities will use iLearn's Comments tool and others will include posts on Padlets created especially for those Activities. It depends on the nature of the Activity - in some cases, I'd like the posts to be anonymous and iLearn's Comments tool allows for that. For other Activities, like the PR Careers Activity, I use Padlets to enable more engaging interaction among classmates.

A: Click on ACTIVITIES and follow the Step-by-Step directions. Each one includes different steps similar to your Orientation.

A: You will see topics listed for each of the 4 Kahoot BONUS Challenges. They progress with the course content. Deadlines are on the Class Schedule.

Citing a Journal

Q: I have found a journal. Instead of citing an author, should I just write the journal name?

A: If there is an author, on the References page, always include the author's name first then the date then the article title then the journal title. In the text of your paper, cite the author's last name and the year like this: (Jones, 2019). If there is no author, use the article title in the text of your paper like this: ("PR for public good," 2019). See the APA Style Template for examples of how to cite journal articles and other sources.
