Kindergarten was the start of my writing journey. Much like most kids, Kindergarten was very scary. In Kindergarten, that's when we first learn phonetic spelling. I was very nervous and shy during the writing lessons because I was also learning which had been my dominant one. I feared being wrong and making mistakes. I was a very slow writer and wanted all of my letters to be perfect. I spent most of my time using Letter outline papers and tracing each letter until it was perfect.

By the time I had made it to Second grade, I was doing very well. I had an amazing teacher named Mrs. Dawson. She taught me how to write stories with a beginning, middle, and an end. We did not do a whole lot of reading in her class, so that was something I did not get to experience as much of in 2nd Grade. The stories we read were often as a group and had been read aloud to us.

4th grade was very different for me. This is the year we were told to pick up different chapter books and read them. My reading levels this year had become very advanced because of the number of books I had read and was constantly reading. Writing responses were introduced to me this year. My knowledge on analyzing books and writing responses on what I had read improved a lot during this year, but the concept of writing full paragraphs with complete sentences was still a struggle for me.

In 7th grade is when we started learning more about claim, evidence, and reasoning. I struggled a lot with this, specifically the reasoning part. When writing became incorporated with science and math, I started to struggle with that. I would often be able to come up with a claim with evidence, but my reasonings were often not detailed enough. Although it would not effect my grade as much, it did frustrate me a lot not being able to write something so simple as a reasoning as to why I said what I said.

By 8th grade we were still doing the same things with claim, evidence, and reasoning. We did it so often that I had become a pro at it. I was no longer struggling with coming up with reasonings and eventually I was told my reasonings were a little too long. I was doing more than what was asked and I became very proud of that. Writing was starting to become my new favorite thing and I was very excited for what Highschool would bring.

In 9th grade we started writing bigger papers. Instead of it being a couple paragraphs, we started writing personal narratives and research papers. I favored personal narratives over research papers because it was much easier for me to talk about something that happened to me personally. When writing research papers, I was very terrified of being accused of plagiarism so it always took me a little longer to find information just because I wanted everything to be in my own words. I struggled with finding reliable information a lot of the times and researching was difficult and frustrating for me.

10th Grade was probably the easiest year for me. Instead of writing papers, our focused had switched to reading books like Of Mice and Men and writing responses on what we had read. We did a lot of project-based things that included a little writing, but not much. My writing improved on an analyzing texts aspect, but as far as writing long papers, I did not get much practice with that during this time.

Junior year was a mix of writing larger papers and analyzing texts. There wasn't much writing happening for me this year because my English class was not a big on papers. Most of my text usage came from texting friends or posting online. I got into a bad habit of using slang in my school papers because I had intertwined school and my phone way too much. That was something that kind of got in the way, but I improved a lot on my text analyzing skills.

This year was very challenging for me. The first semester of my senior year I took English 101. It was paper after paper after paper. The material was so confusing and I was too afraid to ask for help. At one point, I had just given up and stopped doing the work and stopped showing up. My grade failed and the next semester I was put into two English classes. In one of those English classes, I read 10 different books and we did reading logs on them everyday. That was very reading-based and I enjoyed it. The second English class was more paper-based, but the material was much easier to understand and I tried my best in it. I enjoyed the way that teacher incorporated fun with writing so it didn't feel like a drag.

Currently, I am at a point with writing where I am very excited to try new things, especially talking about different topics and researching more on how the mind works during studies or writing papers. The form of text or writing I use most is probably texting friends on social media. Writing papers hasn't been a thing for me just yet, so my form of texts comes through small response paragraphs, TV shows, and texting friends. The only kind of writing practices I use that stick with me are small paragraphs that I have to write for schoolwork. Those seem to be the easiest for me to get done in one sitting. Writing papers is a struggle for me especially being new to college because I still am trying to figure out what ways to study and write work best for me.

I was still struggling a lot with forming paragraphs with complete thoughts and sentences during my 5th grade year. My teacher recognized my struggles and provided extra assistance with helping me learn. She provided outlines for me to work off of and even put laminated sentence starters on our desks just in case we got stuck with forming sentences. My work had improved from her help.
