2) University of Helsinki Music Research Laboratory

The University of Helsinki Music Research Laboratory (UHMRL) is a unique research environment where music, sound, and technology meet. Founded in 1961–1962, it is one of the oldest continuously operating electronic music studios in the Nordic countries and an internationally significant cultural heritage site.

Today UHMRL functions as part of the musicology programme at the University of Helsinki, combining research, artistic practice, teaching, and heritage preservation. Its activities span a wide range of interdisciplinary fields, including computational and computer-assisted music research, sound studies, music acoustics, archaeoacoustics, electroacoustic music history and analysis, as well as research on synthesizers and electronic instruments.

The laboratory is particularly known for its historically significant collection of electronic musical instruments, including devices designed by pioneer Erkki Kurenniemi, which remain in active use in both research and artistic work. UHMRL thus operates simultaneously as a research facility and as a living archive of electronic and experimental music culture.
