In 1993, a new adaptation casted Fiona Shaw, who is also featured on the cover of one of the editions of the book. If her name rings a bell, perhaps it's because she is Harry Potter's aunt Petunia in the movies!

Hey all!! I know it's only been one meetup since we started reading Sally Rooney, but I got excited and felt like pointing out some themes I feel it shares with ICTC. I would also love to know what you think. Here's my list so far:

- Writer's figure and work. Alice and Mr. Mortmain show the professional side of it, both having achieved success, while Cassandra represents a strong writer's vocation.

- Intellectuals. Not only in the figures of the writers but also in Simon I, Mrs. Cotton, Simon II and Eileen.

- Young women's relationships. Friendship between women is vital to both works in my opinion, and it seems to portray a vaguely similar set of opposites in the two stories: a more adventurous girl on one hand, a rather shy one on the other.

- Growing up, seen from very different perspectives and across different timelines. Not only are the tones of the novels nothing like one another but also the chronological approach varies.

- Correspondence. Between Eileen, Alice and Simon in Beautiful World. Cassandra, Rose and Simon in the other case -in which there's journaling too.

- Traveling between Europe and America and within Europe, for work and study.

- Sisters. Probably not a prime theme in Beautiful World, though it remains to be seen whether it will grow more relevant.

- Life-long friends that like each other. In ICTC they are pretty much almost family, which doesn't allow for something real to develop.

- Art. Not only is it present in all the writers' figures but also there's Topaz being a model, Rose singing and playing the piano, the musical passages in ICTC in general and Eileen's ex-boyfriend -who she still grieves- in Beautiful World being a musician.

- Mental health. While mentioned amusingly in Dodie's book -a loose, playful wonder on whether Mr. Mortmain went mad-, it's a serious issue that adds to the drama in Sally's.
