Cambodia was carpet bombed by the US, despite not being officially involved in the war, killing thousands.

In the aftermath of the Vietnam War, a ruthless communist dictator named Pol Pot rose to power with his rebel group called the Khmer Rouge. 

The Cambodia Civil War lasted from 1970-75, between Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge and a leader named Lon Nol. What happened Cambodia was an unintended casualty of the War. The North Vietnamese and Vietcong would use the country for refuge and to escape the war torn conditions of Vietnam. But in response to this, the US conducted bombing campaigns of the country, killing an estimated 50,000 civilians and soldiers alike.

Rather, like in Vietnam, their avid spread of communism throughout the world lead to the rise of communist beliefs in Cambodia and in-turn the rise of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge.

But, Pol Pot's brand of communism and repression was both similar and different to that of Russia Communism. Pol Pot created enemies of Cambodia from a wide range of people: ranging from teachers, lawyers, city dwellers, clergy and even doctors were all ordered to be sought out and executed by the regime. Even people who wore glasses were to be targeted. He also ordered other religious groups like Christians, Buddhists, and Muslims be oppressed and targeted.

Pol Pot would go into hiding and wouldn't pass away until 1997 from heart failure.
