Prices of Bread increased due to poor harvests, which led to the women's march to Versailles. The price of bread rose to a point where most families could not afford to feed themselves. The people were starving, and any attempt to grow food usually ended it in it being collected as taxes . Women were the first people to rise to defend the family, so the women traveled to Versailles.

Its typical for labourers and peasants to owe different nobles seperate fees, on top of the taille( the tax levied on the common people) among other taxes.
Peasants owed as much as one morsel of land, a cow, and a horse, yet multiple nobles would demand for franchers (or 42 pounds) of wheat, oat, mulitple chickens, and currency.
The taille was unfairly levied, as nobles would pay very little for their vast amount of land, while peasants would pay heavily for the small amount of land they possessed.

The rising prices of bread caused an increase in riots incited by women whom frequented the marketplace. The increase was felt most by these women and the poor. Though some were not usually done with the intent to loot or incite violence, these things still occurred as a result of economic troubles.
