Mission Briefing 2
The content of the video relate to the events in the novel so far because in the novel the earth is slowing which means there is more light and less dark so your days are longer and nights are cut short. Which isn’t good for you or your body. The video is explaining what would happen to your body when it doesn’t get the sufficient rest it needs to operate. Or in some people case like Helen who has insomnia which her body isn’t able to go to sleep. So, she is also sleep deprived. Also, if you are sleep deprived you could have a stroke, fainting, and other side effects. Which Helen has the symptoms of gravity sickness that is fainting. So at any point in the day Helen could faint which isn’t good.

How the video relates to the novel is since Julia’s mom isn’t getting enough sleep, this could cause her many problems, and even real timers as well. When she got into the crash, it was because she fainted, Julia was saying how this includes dizziness, fainting, and becoming anorexic. She seemed to be cold when it was pretty hot outside and she was covered by three covers, so her brain is making her think that its cold, (or she is actually cold) so she wants to be warm. Since she isn’t getting enough sleep she can’t clear that, because the video said that the Glymphatic System removes the waste better when the human is sleeping. But she can’t sleep, leading to worse and worse effects.

The contents of the video relates to the novel because the mother is experiencing some of the symptoms of being sleep deprived. An example of this is how she is always tired and moody. I think that the gravity sickness is somewhat like not sleeping for a long time I think this because she also stays up for long periods of time this can cause sleep deprivation. Also the foreshadowing in the book talking about the mother might die could be accurate, I think this because sleep deprivation is lethal and the illnesses are alike.

In the novel Helen is sleep deprived due to her sickness and paranoia which leads for her to do worse things like running over a man and not being able to do ordinary chores as she would do every day without the sickness. In the video they talk about how sleep deprivation can affect the body and it shows most symptoms that Helen has even though her mental state could be involved in what causes these symptoms.

Sleep is a necessity that all humans need to live and become active and to function properly. Adults need 7-8 hours of sleep while adolescents need 10 hours of sleep. In 1965, 17 year old Randy Garner stayed awake for 264 (11 days) to see how the body would cope with sleep. Randy had multiple problems like being moody, can’t identify what object he touched, eyes stopped focusing, hallucinations, paranoia, and had trouble with short term memory. This can result in damage physically and mentally, damage hormones, illness, and in extreme cases death. In the novel, Age of Miracles, people are having trouble sleeping and keeping up due to either real time or clock time. This relates to the events, because people aren’t functioning well and Julia’s family is having trouble functioning properly. Especially Julia's Mom who is having either mass hysteria from the paranoid and stress or illness due to not being able to sleep as well.

If you don't sleep there is a chance of you dying from not sleeping. The student named Randy Garter stayed awake for 264 hours. On the second day his eyes stopped focusing, next he lost the ability to identify objects by touch. By day 3 he was moody and uncoordinated. At the end of the experiment he had trouble concentrating, had trouble with short term memory, became paranoid and started to hallucinate. For others losing shut eye can result as hormonal imbalance, illness and in extreme cases death. During our waking hours cells are busy using our days energy sources which gets broken down to various byproducts including Adenosine. There is a cleaning mechanism for waste products known as the Glymphatic System. The Glymphatic System removes the waste build up.

It also, explains that if you have slept for only six hours or fewer you have a four and a half higher risk of having a stroke or fainting. In the novel, The Age Of Miracles, many people are fainting because of the “syndrom”, which is actually sleep deprivation. Since, the days have gotten longer because of the slowing, the people have slept for less hours.

The Significance of Sleep Deprevation by: Kelly Svendsen

In the novel The Age of Miracles, it is known that the slowing affected people’s circadium rythumn dramatically. Since the periods of darkness were increased signifigantly, each and every body was unsure when it was supposed to send out the chemicals to he rest of the body in order to help it sleep. With this occurance, it caused lots of contreversy in regards to the times of work and school hours. While some people chose to be real timers (following along with their body’s perception of when to go to sleep and wake up), others chose to be clock timers (people who rely on the clock to supply their times of their sleeping schedule). Meanwhile the clock timers had a more organized life, real timers had a sufficient amount of sleep. And as seen in the video, a lack of sleep can increase your chance of having a stroke, cause hallucinations, dull senses, and weaken focus. In the novel, those who followed clock times experienced these symtoms and some developed the slwoing syndrome. Along with this syndrome followed many unpleasant occurances all based off of hysteria and sleep deprevation. Therefore, it is unhealthy and dangerous to proceed with a life that is lacking sleep, body’s fuel.

Though it is believed that the cause of the syndrome may all be mental, the sleep deprivation may still be playing a significant role. In the video it said that this could sometimes lead to death and although we know that Seth Moreno’s mom had cancer sadly, she may have also had sleep deprivation. Additionally, in the video it said 66% of kids/teens are affected or sleep deprived and in the story many kids leave class because they feel bad from “the syndrome” and though it could be that they just want to skip class it could also be that they are sleep deprived.

This is caused by destruction of circadian rhythm meaning difficulty adjusting to the unbalance of light and day as well as night and darkness. The video states that adults should be getting on average of eight hours of sleep per night and children should be getting an average of ten. In "The Age of Miracles" , it is detailed that both Julia , her mother, and many other citizens are getting much less hours of sleep per night. Also, the video states that the symptoms of sleep deprivation are, slow instincts, change of mood and more. In the novel Helen experiences many of these symptoms.

So people might have the syndrome because of the lack of sleep they get from “white nights”. In “The Age Of Miracles” we see that the mom is not getting enough sleep and that many people can not sleep when the sun is out. This is causing a lot of health problems for people like the mom.

The video and the novel Age of Miracles relate in many ways. Sleep deprivation is a huge problem in the novel that comes up many times because Julia's mother can not sleep. Julia's mother has been showing signs of mass hysteria. She is unable to sleep and always worried and because of that she doesn't feel good and is always tired. Julia's mother is having trouble functioning and living life, for example Helen is not driving anymore. Julia's mother is not able to function because her lack of sleep and worrying. This happens to many people who lack in sleep, like the video stated.

The video has to do with how sleep affects people by accumulating too much data and garbage. In the novel, Julias mother is not getting enuogh sleep because she is too worried and scared for what is to come. She seems to not be functioning well and her body tries to give her the signal that she needs sleep. One example was the night of New years when she fainted. Unfortunately the incident was too quick and they hit someone. The man was killed instantly and left julias mother, helen, in more worry and nervousness than ever. As you can see, the video was displaying the consequences of not getting enough sleep.

Even though people like her husband, Joel believe that “the syndrome” is mental, her sleep deprivation is a main symptom of the sickness. In the video it said that sleep deprivation can lead to death. When Helen fainted the first time, which could've been a result of sleep deprivation. The young man who was hit eventually died. In this case, sleep deprivation cause the death of another person. In the video it also states that 66% percent of juveniles have sleep deprivation like in the story when all the kids leave class early because they are suffering from “the syndrome.”

This is brought about by pulverization of circadian beat meaning trouble acclimating to the unbalance of light and day just as night and obscurity. The video expresses that grown-ups ought to jump by and large of eight hours of rest for every night and kids ought to get a normal of ten. In The Age of Miracles, it is point by point that both Julia, her mom, and numerous different residents are getting substantially less long stretches of rest every night. Likewise, the video expresses that the side effects of lack of sleep are, slow senses, change of mind-set and that's just the beginning. In the novel Helen encounters a significant number of these indications.

Maybe her insomnia is giving her this gravity sickness and that’s why it might be affecting her. Also the real timers stay awake for too long which could also give them these symptoms. Another thing is that since the time is slowing down some people may not be able to get sleep in the broad daylight and might also start with these symptoms.

The video listed some symptoms of sleep deprivation and they align with the symptoms that Helen is showing in the book. Maybe it's not gravity or anxiety. Maybe Helen just isn't getting too much sleep. You can't blame her. The slowing changed the sunup and sundown cycle. I think that Helen's circadian rhythm just hasn't adapted to the new time. People, like Helen, are going through “the sickness” makes them stay up at night or even countless nights. As the video said, people can get sick from lack of sleep and even start to become angry or defensive. These are some of the actions Helen takes, she becomes very angry and defensive, while also becoming very sick in the process, so this whole sickness may be from lack of sleep at night. Also, I imagine sleeping in pure light, must not be the best and may even keep others up at night because based on studies in our world, light from our phones or from large light sources can keep us up at night, so the light from the sun may also be keeping people up at night which may make them stay up which leads them to becoming sick.
