I was organically enrolled in a church school, but eventually left the seminary to enroll at the University of St. Petersburg. I was actively intrigued by math and science during my first 3 years, but during my fourth year I conducted a research study on the pancreas which won a university award. In 1875 I finished my degree and then went to an academy of Medical Surgery. I was admired by many professors and invited to study under them in research
,specifically psychological.

2 years after I decided to go to school for medical surgery, I was invited to do research under one professor and then invited by another one after. After completing my doctorate, I went to Germany to study with Carl Ludwig in the Heidenhain Labratories, in which I stayed for 2 years. I then left and returned to Russia, in which I was declined a position at the University of St. Petersburg, and was offered 2 positions, one in Siberia and one in Poland. I turned them both down and decided to become a Professor of Pharmacology in the Military Medical Academy for 5 years.

My work in the field of psychology contributed to many different neurological science developments. I was mostly focused on experimenting on animals and the digestive system. One of my main topics of research was involuntary reflexes, along with temperament, and conditioning. I was able to preform many experiments which helped me to further develop The Work of Digestive Glands in 1897, after completing a total of 12 years in research.

After a long time period of completing very important research, I started to conduct more research on involuntary reflexes. These reflexes include the 4 temperament types, which were phlegmatic, choleric, sanguine and melancholic. I helped to change the definitions of these rerms, by adding information based upon my studies. I also spent a large amount of time with my fellow researchers exploring TMI, or Transmarginal Inhibition. My research was then able to show how all 4 temperament types were able to respond to a stimuli in the same manner. It also helped to show how they went through the same responses but at different times or speeds.

Involuntary Reflexes- An instantaneous movement in response to a stimulus.
Conditioning- When a response becomes more frequent after a result to reinforcement
Temperament- Biologically based aspect society of one’s personality
Phlegmatic- Having an unemotional and calm disposition
Choleric- Irritable and high-tempered
Melancholic- Gloomy or over-emotional
Sanguine- positive and optimistic
TMI- Transmarginal Inhibition, which is and organism’s response to overwhelming stimuli.

I hope to make new discoveries on the definitions off the 4 types of temperament based on the observations these animals will provide me with.
