“From year to year the child grew, and her misery also...¨ (...) ¨ Shivering under the taters of what was once a calico dress, sweeping the street before daylight with an enormous broom in her little red hands and tears in her large eyes¨. (Page 47)

In this quote we can see that Cosette has no idea of how a family should actually be, in this case, she has no relationship with her real mom and she knows that she needs her and the love of her real family. It is out of this world for a five year old child to be a slave and yet not getting to know her family.

¨Life became stern to Marius. To eat his coats and his watch was nothing(…)There was a period in Marius´ life when he swept his own hall, when he bought a pennyworth of Brie cheese at the market-women's.¨. (Page 181)

In this quote it is expressed how poor Marius is and how he suffers in his daily life with that situation. Since ah started following his dead father's beliefs, he separated from his grandfather and he's been dealing with economic problems. This shows again the theme of poverty; it's been appearing every one ina while in the book.

When Javert was gone, Jean Valjean fired the pistol in the air.

Then he re-entered the barricade and said: ¨It is done.¨ ¨. (Page 314)

This quote shows us the amount of mercy Jean Valjean has for Javert, even though Javert has wanted to make his life impossible and is willing to do anything to get him arrested, Valjean shows compassion for a human being; no matter how positive or negative his actions are, mercy should always be present while taking a very important and serious decision.

“Monseigneur, Monseigneur¨ cried she,¨”does your greatness know where the silver basket is?¨ (...) ¨ Good heavens! It is stolen. That man who came last night stole it¨. (Pages 30 and 31)

This quote explains that even though everything Jean has passed in jail for stealing a loaf of bread, he still hasn't learned the consequences and continues stealing. At the same time we can see that there is mistrust between Jean and the bishop people (Monseigneur Bienvenu and Madame Magloire) because they had trusted him and he defrauded them. Even Though the silver was not 100% from them, it is still considered stealing. I can expect that Jean will still continue stealing since he has done it after going to jail for committing that same crime.

What do I care? I have money. I am very tired- twelve leagues on foot, and I am so hungry. Can I stay?¨

       ¨Madame Magloire¨, said the bishop, ¨Put on another plate.¨ (Pages 16 and 17)

In this quote, it is expressed a theme of forgiveness in the book because Jean Valjean was accepted into the bishop, and the people who accepted him knew that he had been in the galleys; by the matter of fact, they still let him in, feed him, and gave him a place to sleep. This also shows forgiveness because even though he has a yellow passport, the church accepted him because God said to always forgive.

You are worthy of promotion rather than disgrace. I desire to keep your place¨. (Page 69)

In this quote, Monsieur Madeleine is expressing to Javert that he is a good man, and if he wants to get dismissed, it would be a disgrace to him that Javert gives up on his work towards monsieur. Also, monsieur is telling him that he is worth even a promotion, but the least he could expect is Javert to move on. This shows some empathy towards different social classes.

Also, cosette talks with Jean Valjean and expresses to him her great affection. This can be expressed as excitement for love because usually everyone gets excited when they get married and this is their case; they can't wait to start their new journey in their lives.

He reached the opposite end and then returned, and this time he approached a little nearer to the seat.¨. (Page 69)

In this quote, we can see for first time that Marius has actually fallen in love. He's been going everyday to the park to see cosette, a thing he has never done before or felt for a woman. This shows that he is in love and will do anything to be close to her. At the end, everyone is willing to do anything to be with the person they love.

(Page 337)

In this quote we can see that Javert doesn't know what to do with his life and he is confused on his actions and the consequences they should have. He did not recognize that Jean Valjean saved his life and he wanted to arrest him, so he decided to commit suicide since he didn't do his job correctly and wrote a letter to the police with various suggestions; his life was a road with no ending, so he decided to put an end to it.

This affected Marius in a way that he even told Valjean to get away from Cosette the more he could.
