After completing this step, I think interdisciplinarity requires people to be more hands on with education. People have to do more than just state their concerns with education and physically go out there and address the concerns. For example, volunteering or working at a recreation center is a great opportunity to get involved in children's lives. After you establish a genuine relationship with children, you gain their trust. Once you gain their trust, you are able to provide meaningful advice that will likely get received.

Doing this video helps me understand how we can tie interdisciplinary into this issue. We never know the full story, only the kids perspective, so we as adults have to be more active. In school we have to be more stern and consistent when it comes to school regulations, that means teaching students about major issues that goes everyday. Between 60s and 80s there was an opportunity for children to go to school in the evenings, so they don't have to miss out in education. For example, college students work during the day and they go to school in the evenings. The government or lower, middle and high schools should provide volunteers to that kind of access to younger students. If its possible to have different approach in helping children emotionally by providing few minutes in class to discuss the issues and build a community in class. To my knowledge, there have been studies done on how having dogs can lower stress in students.

Svetlana Jacobs

October 4, 2018

Dr. Omer Ari

This time we concentrated about disciplines and phenomena’s when it comes to dropout rate in Hispanic society. Most people don’t know, Hispanics struggle more in school than any other society. My group and I had to dig more and analyze why there is an issue with students dropping out of the schools. There is a lot going on in schools like students are feeling less motivated, language bearer, attitude towards the culture and to each other and also peer pressure. All of these things are phenomena. The reason schools lack all these disciplines is because of government doesn’t put full amount of support in education, finance, and grants to support extra help for students. There should be a requirement for teachers to be familiar and aware of the culture and the language. Being aware of the culture and understanding will have a better results of connecting with the students. Also when there is a new comers and having an English language as a second language can be a difficult because it’s hard to connect to your own pairs when you don’t know the language.

Step 5 Summary

Step 5 Summary:

After building the table for STEP 5, you will compare and contrast the sources you analyzed for STEP 5. Keep in mind the central issue and how each insight contributes to the broader understanding of the central issue. Look for points of conflict/commonality and their sources. Engage in perspective taking by taking on the perspective of each author—this will help with comparing and contrasting of disciplinary perspectives. Look for concepts that appear to be the same/similar and how they are defined across disciplines. For example, the concept of “sustainability” will have an economic orientation for an economist but an environmental orientation when a biologist uses it. Then write a 250-word response on your findings from your comparing/contrasting of the disciplinary insights. Your response goes below.

For the step 5 I used five important sources that I think it was useful to analyze it. The disciplines that I used was linguistics, culture, sociology, politics and ed psychology. It was interesting to brake down to all the disciplines and it made me to perceive the sources differently. I got to look at the articles meanings differently because we had to analyze author’s bias, research methods, summary and over all the meaning what the article is concentrating on. Not only did the articles concentrated on what the author was saying but it showed statistics about the research. I didn’t realize how the table helped me to be specify when I was reading each articles. I wouldn’t have recognized the depth of what the authors were trying to perceive to their readers. Each of the authors gave different views about the dropout rate for High Schoolers. When I was analyzing the article about linguistics, I had to pay attention to theories, research methods, author’s bias, the key concept and conclusion. Ever time, I wrote the points from the articles, it was more understandable and it was interesting to hear some strong bias and arguments. Also I could see in the articles how writers were passion it about their research project and how the issues were still a problem. My articles concentrate about how can we as society fix some of the issues and what were the specific causes and effects. Also, I got to learn how real research papers should look at once I started to analyze it in depth.

Site Visited At STEP 5 our goal is to closely read/study disciplinary sources you located at STEP 4 and compare/contrast the insights they offer. We want you to also draw on insights from your site visit as you consider the conflicts/similarities between disciplines in the insights they offer. Please write below any insights from your site visit that relates to the conflicts/similarities you noted above.

I have not had a chance to do Site Visit because no one has contacted me.

At STEP 5 our goal is to closely read/study disciplinary sources you located at STEP 4 and compare/contrast the insights they offer. We want you to also draw on insights from a second video you’ve watched as you consider the conflicts/similarities between disciplines in the insights they offer on your group’s problem/project. Please write your insights below.

Child growth and development:
This video concentrated how culture, psychology and environment can change your developments differently through school, house and teacher/parents experience. Dr. Kwon mentioned if the parents have good relationship with the teacher’s than the child will be more understanding with the teacher and environment. Also the speaker mention how her child didn’t talk in school for like a year. However she is a bilingual. All three concepts changed her because of language, culture and relationship difference.
