Well, I have visited that site before and enjoy the materials I have used. I typed in a passage the The Dog Diaries. There were not any tier 2 words according to this website. In reading this to other classes I had to explain a lot of vocabulary. This tells me just how low my students are. I will rethink using this text with my third graders. I might use it with the second graders.

I've never used that site before, but it seems like it could be very helpful. I inserted part of the story, "There was an old lady who swallowed a fly" and it didn't identify any Tier 2 words. There are definitely a few words I know I would have to explain to my students as Kindergarteners, especially since in a story like that, the words are very repetitive. Quick explanations can be given, but there would definitely be words I'd consider TIer 2 that require explanation.

Rhyming AnimalsBy: Sue PetersonThis is a poem about many animals that live in, by and around you. This is a poem about many animals you see. It repeats the sound of words, too. Poems that repeat the sounds of words are called rhymes. Can you try to see in your mind the images of the many animals that I talk about when you read the poem? Are they large or small, do they live inside or outside? These animals live in different places - the garden, a park, the zoo, the beach, the woods, a lake or an ocean.

The words do not really fall into families, but there are a couple of words with multiple meanings (images and wood[s]). One word that I feel is abstract is poem.

I was able to find a chapter from a text online and just copy and paste it into the tool. That made it so fast and convenient! I could see using this to save time when trying to find vocabulary words from entire chapters of books and long passages! The only thing the website can't take into consideration is the uniqueness of the group of students I would be working with.

I have never used this resource, but I find it could be helpful when working with unfamiliar text. The text passages I used were found on the K5learning site which has grade level texts used for reading comprehension. I chose a second grade passage. Out of the 200 word passage, 7 words were identified to be tier two, but only one of the words was categorized as a 2nd grade tier two word. The other 6 were between 3rd and 4th grade. This makes me wonder how they determine what grade level the words fall into. It also makes me wonder if the passage would be too hard for the students.

Most kids love Dr. Seuss books they quite difficult for lower level readers. Academic Word Finder is great for large amount text and does help as great starting point. You really have trust your knowledge of your students. They lack a lot experiences outside of the village. We take for granted.

This is my first time to use the Academic Word Finder. I like it. It's nice that it shows the vocabulary words and whether they are below grade level, on grade level, and above grade level. I like how it gives the part of speech that the word is used in the text and its meaning. I also like the example sentences. With the text that I pasted, Academic Word Finder highlighted about half the words that I would have chosen for my students; you of course, still need to know the ability/knowledge of your students.

I am digging this website! I am so happy I signed up. This was my first time using it and I was sold instantly! My only thing is how I would be able to upload my textbooks to this, so I don't have to type in the whole text. I LOVE how it shows the parts of speech and all the different definitions of the word with example sentences. I will definitely be using this resource in my future lessons. I choose a Social Studies text because that is an area I am personally comfortable with and usually consisted of Tier 3 words, which are more difficult. I really like how it shows which grade level the text is used for, which will also assist me with differentiation in my classes, especially Social Studies, where I teach all my students from the same book. Sometimes I have chosen texts that may be too difficult, instead, I will run through this tool first, and go from there.

It was somewhat surprising the words that were chosen. The text, "Boy Were We Wrong About Dinosaurs," included words such as cold-blooded, warm-blooded, microscope, x-ray, fossils and it did not pick one of the tier 3 words I thought essential to the text. However, it did seem to help me in narrowing down the tier 2 words and gave great examples of third grade friendly definitions and sentences. It also seem to choose words that were repeated in the text. However, some of the words I would not choose because they seem like a tier 1 or too familiar to the students, such as found, enormous, and shape. Although, ancient, clue, nor, and probability seemed to support the meaning of the text and could be transportable vocabulary to other content areas. I would not have noticed nor and probability on my own and be able to see the connections to other subject areas.
