Towards the end of our meeting we got into heating discussion about the imbalance and frustration of funding in education. It was important to have a such an intelligent and well rounded conversation on the differences of our beliefs on the education system. We touched on the differences between private and public, funding and non funding, and church and state.

Teachers have a very important role in kids lives, this role is changing and there are benefits and challenges to everything we are expected to do. Our jobs are complicated with the different responsibilities in all areas of students lives.

We find that there is a connection between behavior of children and what they experience at home. This is controlled and dealt with in terms of classroom management styles that the teacher brings into the classroom. We touched on the importance of differentiation of students while meeting the standards, this is an important insight to student learning.

We also talked about the importance of safety with the schootings that have come into the media light and what we as teachers procedures will look like. We lastly talked and connected ideas with thoughts about peer relationships and influences and how those ideas affects student learning in the classroom.

Concept Addressed:
Home Life Tied to Behavior in Class

Comments:
Kiernan's teacher shared some confidential information regarding some of the students in the classroom. This was very helpful, being able to relate to challenging students. The teacher made a point to share the importance of making connections with your students.

Anna's teacher has the students write in a journal, the teacher mentioned that this is an excellent way of getting to know your students on more of a personal level in a non invasive way.

Concept Addressed:
Classroom Management

Comments:

Anna notices that her teacher is very strict when it comes to classroom management. When students get riled up she becomes firm with her students which creates an environment of slight fear. There is, however, good order within the classroom. Anna agrees and disagrees with this because though they should behave they are still just kids.

Amanda noticed that her teacher uses a lot of desist techniques to being the attention back to her during lessons. She also noticed that her teacher does not get confrontational and call students out in class, but pulls them aside. The teacher has good classroom control, however, when the kids split into groups and do separate work they sometimes become riled up and get off task.

Natalie noticed that he teacher has really great classroom management, she has a combination of techniques that work together well to have the kids under control. The teacher uses little phrases and songs to get their attention and keep it, if they don't, they have to go back and do it until they get it right.

Natalie and Anna also noticed that the classroom right now because of the preparation of MCA's have an emphasis on Math and Reading to make sure they are prepared instead of well rounded learning. We found frustration with the reliance on the standardized testing. Kiernan also noticed that there is a huge importance to data from the standardized tests. This isn't the best way of noticing the improvement of children, and providing opportunities to give the help to kids that need it.

Concept Addressed:
Differentiation with Meeting Standards

Comments:

Kiernan talked about the acceptance of homework only if its above an 80% This is an excellent way of making sure they keep working on it until they get it. He is also very big on the importance of improvement and meeting the standards. She mentioned that he doesn't like to watch studnet's fail, but work until they succeed.

Amanda talked about her teacher and how they break the students into groups. They are not working on preparation for the MCA's. She noticed that the advanced kids are bored and wondering why there is a review. But also the kids that usually struggle have quite a bit of noticeable decay. The kids that need extra help and review it was almost a complete reteaching of the previous lesson.

Concept Addressed:
Peer Relationships and Influences

Comments:
Kiernan talked about her teacher wanting to break stereotypes. He tries to alternate calling on boys and girls, and give the chance for the quite kids to answer questions. She mentioned that he doesn't give choice when it comes to choosing groups.

Natalie talked about the abundance of group work in her classroom and that it is really cool to see that there is a mix of girls, boys and academic ability when they get a choice on group work. Our teacher and the school makes it very clear that there is an importance to knowing how boys and girls should treat each other, with respect. They are respectful when it comes to how they interact, but this doesn't come into play when choosing groups, I find that there is little exclusion.

Amanda noticed that there is a lot of peer influence on behavior in the classroom. When the students work in groups with friends they often become off task, but when the teacher moves them to separate groups without friends the students are no longer challenged.

Concept Addressed:
Safety in the Classroom

Comments:
We all noticed that there was a school shooting at the time that we were observing in the schools. We were struck with the fact that this could happen anywhere, in any school, at every level. We were discussing the lack of preparation teachers get when dealing with random and abrupt situations like school shootings.

We talked about the tightening of security in schools across the country. We also talked about the differences of security in our schools that we went to and what measures they took after shootings became relevant and known.
