We need to allow more opportunities for people to get out of poverty. Often people born in poverty grow up in it and then also end up spending their adult lives in poverty. I believe this is due to the lack of opportunity to a higher paying job and the help that these people need. These people do not have stable housing, safe environments, and access to the healthy foods they need to be at their full potential. When a person is not provided with their basic needs their whole way of life is affected. For example, if they are not eating enough food or the right foods, they may not have the needed energy to complete a task at a higher paying job as someone not struggling with poverty.

There are things like food stamps, minimum wages, food banks, unemployment. There are many resources and places that could help people. There is also Child Protective Services which could help place the child in the best fit home for them. Often what we think is the best place for children is not. Most children want to be with their parents, especially young children and taking them away could just worsen the situation for the child and the parent. In addition, although there are many active services that help with food and income, most of these programs are very difficult to get into and take time to go into affect. This leave the families struggling for longer than they should be. These programs also just help with the bare minimum possible leaving them still stressed about money and food. So yes, there are some things in place already that help families who are struggling but is that really the best we can do?

This would include housing, food, running water and electricity. If those things are not something a person is able to provide on their own, there should be a system into place that can help get them the things they need. Food stamps should be available to anyone who needs it, not such a strict application. As a 19 year old living alone and in-charge of paying for everything on my own I should have access to them as well and not wait months to hear back. People who truly are trying their hardest to provide for the basic needs in life should be granted some help when needed. Children who grow up in a family struggling with poverty may not have as many opportunities to succeed in life as a child who is in a family who is doing abundantly well. It should not be the child who is suffering, because their family can not provide the basic needs.

We could provide job opportunities for these families and daycare facilities to help the parents while they work. They could teach budgeting and how to best manage their money that they start making and then once they have the hang of it, they will not need the assistance anymore. Which would benefit everyone and make it possible to help more people. The help provided would allow growth and not just allow them to keep floating by. We could also have more homeless shelters or housing for families without a shelter. Many of the ones we have now are always full and hard to find openings. Also, while they are there, we should be finding ways to help them find long term shelter and not just to help them with one night.
