Schools should have more outdoor time and less rote learning and desk work. They need to move and play!

We should have less emphasis on academics. And children should not be graded or constantly assessed.
Good, quality education should be accessible to all children. Schools need to be a safe space for all. We need dedicated and caring teachers that understand the growing needs of the child.
We need what waldorf education provides now. Something they can experience in real life. Something they can experience and feel with the heart; a lively education.

Nowadays, children have too much time on technology devices. Children need more time, chance and space to work with their physical body instead of all these technology medium. Also, school need to work closely with parents. Parents may not have much ideas on having quality times with children. Hence, school could invite parents to involve more in different school activities and development programmed. This could give parents an insight on how to grow and learn together with their children.

Our group believe that the children should be offered a learning experience that can connect with nature with freedom of thinking within pre-set boundary. We need to break out from the norm where certain set of skills / knowledges are fed to the children in the conventional classroom or enrichment classes. The end result that we want in our children is for them to have a fulfill and happy soul.

Education should not only focus on the intellect aspect but also focus on the heart as well. We need to guide them to make decisions through their heart and gut. There is a need to build warmth, security and connection with themselves and each other. The focus should not be on the gadgets. The children need to spend time to connect with their senses rather than gadget. Arts and crafts is another important aspect in education. School should introduce beauty and what is wonderful. The teacher who gave me a vivid memory in my early primary school life was a lady who was our class teacher in year 2. She often had bad temper and very strict with the class. She would punished the whole class by spanking our hands with ruler when one of us made mischief so we were very afraid of her. She shared favoritism with the beautiful or rich kids in the class and made the rest felt insignificant.

Impressions of Teachers
The teacher that left a lasting impression was my English teacher. She entered the classroom with all the grace of a swan. It was also in the way she moved and spoke. She had a very lovely, gentle and kind teaching temperament and all her students just loved her. We enjoyed her lessons and all wanted to carry her bag or books to teachers room or her car for her. She also was eveready to help us whenever we had a problem. She was firm but so so kind. This left a deep and lasting impression.

For the question for the most impressive teacher in my life before 12 years old, I had a very skillful music teacher. He took the initiative to form an ensemble of diatonic flute, melodica and etc. and I was one of the four lucky ones who was chosen to be a snare drummer. Although I did not continue playing drum after but that had opened up my interest in music.

Besides that, I would like to mention the experience as a teacher's child. My mother was a primary teacher in the same school that I was in. That made me always feel in the eyes of all the teachers in the school. Indirectly, I was having much pressure to behave properly and not to do things wrong, although my mother did not put the pressure in me. I would say that I was trapped in that situation, to be a good person and then I lost the ability to be myself and what I want in most of the circumstances. Until now, I work so hard to find and still finding the "I".

What we mean by this is to nurture children into an inclusive environment and not a competitive environment where winning is the goal. We should encourage children to work together and bring people together towards a common goal. I could still remember my Grade 3 main class teacher. I always like to look at her, I like how she dressed herself. She would always match her high heels shoes, handbags and accessories with her dresses. She would walk straight up with her pumps heels.
She was a firm but gentle teacher, her voice was very mellow. What amazed me the most was her Chinese calligraphy writing. Every stroke was very firm and strengthful. Not to mention her writing in Chinese character, that was so beautifully written.
She inspired me a lot when I was a child that led me in participating in calligraphy competition and I make sure my writing is beautifully written ever since then.

During my schooling time, rattan cane were pretty common among the teachers. But there was one teacher that stood out. When I was 11 years old, my science teacher, Ms. Lee was a scary figure to me. Every morning, she would ask all the children to line up for her to check our homework. Those that did not complete their homework would be punished. There are many teachers who have made good and bad impressions on me. All of them had made an impression in various ways. Hence it is quite difficult to pin down. Having said that, I would like to share two particular teachers who made a good and bad impression respectively.
Good impression:
My Year 1 teacher. She was the first person who welcomed me to the school. She was kind and gentle. She was interested in our work; during class she would walk around the class room and acknowledge our work. And when we handed in our work she made sure she made a positive comments on our work.
Bad impression:
My year 5 Malay language teacher. She never smiled when she entered the class. She often would ask us to just quietly sit down and read the pages which she stated on the blackboard. She was not interested in our work. And often, we heard hear speak derogatory words under her breath.

The teacher that left a lasting memory for the first 12 years of my life was my primary 1 to 3 Form teacher. She was my first teacher that I get to know when I reached the school on the first day. She was also my Bahasa Melayu language teacher. A tall lady who always wore a smile on her face. She made me class monitor on the first day of school. :) She was always attentive to me and always asked whether I could understand or not as I was the only Chinese pupil out of 30 over students in her class. All my classmates were either Muslims, Indians or local ethnic minority. ( I grew up in an oil palm estate as my dad had been working there throughout his career life.) It might be due to her, I had a good start in my Bahasa language and I always scored my Bahasa exam paper. I believe, it is due to her as well, I always love my school life from primary to secondary.

Children need encouragement to express themselves. To give them a safe and guided space to express themselves. To know that they are heard and there is no right or wrong to what they have to say.

Adults often make decisions for their children without considering if it is suitable, the right time for them, or if that the child is comfortable with it. However, the other extreme is true with some children who have too much freedom that they are not aware of their boundaries. So “freedom with boundary” is encouraged where the child is heard and acknowledged but with guided boundaries as to how far they go or gentle feedback if they have gone beyond.

Educators should seek to provide a healthy, loving and yet carefree environment for the child. When the child feels safe, he or she then feels free to express their thoughts and ideas. They could take it a step further and ‘think out of the box’ and not feel the need to give the ‘correct’ or ‘right’ answer.

The school could show this by example to the parents to encourage this kind of communication and relationship with the child. It is not enough to be educated in school but also carried through at home.

I love music until today and as a little girl, my parents sent me for piano lessons. They found a very 'good and popular' piano teacher who was very busy because she was very 'good'. I didn't enjoy my lessons as I was stressed out by how she was so strict and that she used a metal ruler to knock my fingers when I didn't curve them the correct way. It took the pleasure out of playing piano for me. I later asked to quit my piano lessons as it was a dread to to go to class and I was put off the idea of music exams. Today I still own a piano, I still love music and I can play simple tunes on the piano for my own pleasure.

We concluded that the main stream education in Malaysia is only interested in results and grading orientated.

The most impressive teacher i remember in my life was my Std 4-6 class teacher, who got us all stand-up and answer questions. if we managed to get the right answer then will get a Strepsil medicated candies and if got the wrong answer, we will be caned. Guess what ? I always being caned.. my this little mind just simply cant memorized the 40 questioned she wanted us to memorize. Therefore, although she used to happily announced in class for the new favour she got, but I never give it a damn, cause it had nothing to do with me.

When graduated from Primary school, i just simply cant wait to get out from this school. I chosen a secondary school which my primary friends not going to, most of them still went to the same secondary school which sharing the same compound and meeting the same faces.

Till now, my primary classmates still visited the class teacher yearly during Chinese New Year and buy her meal, but i dont feel comfortable meeting her. I dont think she's someone who is important in my primary school days that i should appreciate and pay her in return.

Another side effect that i got is : i will never buy Strepsil Medicated candies, even though now i am working and afford to buy if for myself

My classroom teacher at the age of 12 is a geography teacher. She was not tall. She was not serious but imposing. She always wore well-fitting pantsuit like a boss. Her teaching method was very lively and fun. She also managed our class differently than most teachers at the time. The most impressive is that we are allowed to bring comics to the school. We just needed to put the comics in the cabinet at the back of the classroom and could take out to the classmates after school. So we didn't need to do it under the table. This teacher made me feel respected and trusted.

The impression of teachers

The first teacher came into my mind was the teacher who slapped on face when I was 9 years old.
We moved to a new place and I have to changed to new school when I was 9.
I was nervous, unsecured.
Within the first month in new school, one day when teacher was talking, I heard some noise behind me. I turned around wanted to see who was talking. When I turned back to the front, that teacher just stood at my place and slapped on my face, pointing at me saying that I wasn't paying attention to her. I didn't got chance to explained because was I stunned.

The second teacher that I still remember is the class teacher when I was 12 years old. She dressed up nicely everyday and had a very nice smiling face.
I was very small size and seems like not many people noticed me. But she saw me and gave me the chance to perform on stage. She gave me confidence and trusted that I can do it.

She was my mainstream primary school class teacher who is friendly, non-bossy and yet the class followed her instructions well most of the time. I can remember she guided her class by speaking from the heart, communicated well in the intention on what to do and what not. She is also creative in initiating new activities, eg book exchange which is relatively new in my school those days. She acknowledged good behavior in her class. (1) What is the need you see in the society in terms of education?

It is wonderful that Teacher Ursula starts the course by Waldorf History and Comparing the problem and treats which arose on Steiner Time and Our Time. I believe that the Contemporary Age is coming to the end, we are in the time of change. Ex. Middle Age (Dark Ages) Collapse of Roman Empire --> Renaissance, World War 1, 2 --> America leading Modern Age, and Contemporary Age --> Unknown. Thus, I believe, that we can find wisdom in Steiner’s philosophy in terms of spiritual knowledge, to faces the threat of changes, and also in educating our child to face these future challenges.

Even though we might not have the knowledge of the age of changes that we are in, but human as a spiritual being, can still sense the changes passively, we can feel that we are dragged into a tremendous wheel of change, and it is crushing on us. So people (adults / parents) become more anxiety, and young generations starts hiding in their shell, becoming more disconnected, more cold and more numb to the world. So there is the phenomena of anxiety and otaku culture (焦慮與內捲).

In this case, I think the Chinese word of student (學生), perfectly definite the need of education, “learn to live”. And the steps are 1. How to live 2. How to live a better life 3. How to penetrate mission in live. I think this is the most important meaning of education. As a comparison, our mainstream education are training us to be a mechanical part who serve this machinery society, which I think in some meaning dead. We are taught and examine to be a skillful labor, but not a lively free soul. We are not taught to sense, to feel, to question, to challenge and to think of our life.

And I believe the Waldorf Education, in terms of spiritual knowledge, humanity and arts, could guide us find inner peace in this age of change, and figure out our own way to live in it, uplift our soul, and prepare our next generation for a new civilization.

I am kind of introvert kid during my childhood period, seldom talked and not very good in studies, but until now I still can remember the happiest moment in my primary school period was every Saturday. Me and my choirmates spend almost every Saturday morning to practise singing. I could remember the teacher who was my choir teacher (from grade 1 to grade 4)

The teacher face was a bit chubby, he can sing, play piano very well, and he was humour. Every year, we will participated in the state choir competition. He guided us very well.

1. Nowadays, children are losing their connection with the earth. They do not know how the food comes, how much effort and strength that one has put in to grow the food they are eating, they even can't recognize it. The school should connect the children with the earth but not just focusing on world.

2. The education system now is more on generating the children to be the same be it in their thinking, their creativity and the outcome from the work they are doing.
This has led to children do not have the courage and confidence to do something different from others. Thus, follow with the flow is the safest of all.
The lack of unfolding one's individuality should be strenghthened and rooms for creativity should be allowed and encouraged in the education as everyone is a unique soul

The most impressive teacher to me was the one who slapped me without any reason. In my memory, when I was 7yo, this teacher always beaten us with rattan which named as "loving hand".

My Grade 1 Class Teacher - She is very gentle and amiable. She made me felt welcome and settled when first going to a new school. She is always gentle and speak softly.

My Grade 6 Class Teacher - Before she became my class teacher, almost everyone in the school scared of her. I could felt the class tension even on the first day of school. At the end of the year, I found that she would only be very strict and fierce toward the "naughty" one. On the other hand, she was reasonable if we told her our problems and she won't not punish. Today, I believe she was under lots of pressure from the school as she is always be the Grade 6 First Class which is very result orientation.

Throughout my primary and secondary school life, I was fortunate to have mostly great if not amazing teachers. The first teacher that made deep impression on me was a temporary teacher when I was in Class 3 (9 years old). He was another class' permanent teacher but he replaced my class teacher who went for maternity leave for 3 months. Teacher Sazalee had this sparkle in his eyes whenever he entered our class and his voice was so energetic and happy and I loved it when he told stories and made us laughed. He sat on his table and swung his legs like a child, and jumped around entertaining the children. He closed the door and curtains sometimes to keep the mood for storytelling. I was a shy kid in class but he always picked me and a few other introvert kids to come forward to participate. He left the school shortly after to continue his studies but he promised us he would be back to see us on our Achievement Concert Day. He kept his promise. He even beamed and shook my hand excitedly when I promised him I would win a certain prizes and I did. That moment was unforgettable for me, being a shy kid as he remembered me.

A teacher who had a deep impact on me, she was not my subject teacher, but deeply influenced me.
In elementary school, I was a good student in the eyes of my teachers and classmates. I went from class president, inspector, until I became the head of the inspector in the sixth grade. The teacher had nothing but love and appreciation for me.
But in the sixth grade year, this female teacher was new to our school.
At one time, the whole school teachers went to a meeting, and the school order of course fell on the responsibility of the inspector.
I was responsible for patrolling the school classes during the teachers' meetings. I did one patrol and then returned to my class, sat in my seat, and did my homework.
At this point, this female teacher called me out and she questioned me as to why I wasn't on patrol and why I was in class.
Her sharp and stern eyes and cold words made my head go blank and made me rise up in shame.

She is strict, firm, who set high expectation on academic and also a just person. I always get punishment for not finishing homework as I was quite a lazy student. At the beginning, I dislike her a lot. There is a time, I worked hard on essay. During lesson, she asked me to read aloud the essay I wrote to everybody in class. I thought it is punishment. Later on, she pointed out some good points in the essay, and I felt she noticed my hard work. So she turned to be my favourite teacher since then. And also I started to study hard and do my homework. She is my most memorable teacher until today.

If we were punished, if we did not get good grades in the test and could not do the homework he gave, we would be punished. I am very grateful to him because my basic Malay is not bad. A teacher needs to be inspiring and a great role model for the children.

A teacher should feel like the sun. Children should be enveloped in their light and warmth. Love and trust must be fostered between a teacher and the students.

While forming good relationships with them, one needs to also establish firm boundaries, while giving them the space and freedom to express themselves.

A teacher needs the ability and patience to handle challenging behaviour calmly and objectively.

My grade 1 class teacher was a newly graduated teacher. She always look neat and tidy and wear matching suit. I feel she is so capable at that time and I admire her.

- The most Impressive teacher
The most impressive I have met was Mr Charles Lim, he was my english tutor. He and the wife were such a wonderful teacher. Not only do they teaching grammar and vocabulary, they also shared almost everything in life with the students, including gardening, enjoying classical music, baking and cooking dishes.
As both of them are quite aging, students are taking turns helping them to walk the dogs, feeding doves and fishes, buying breakfast, lunch and dinner, or even sending them to clinic. He was such a perfectionist in preparing his notes and so being his students will automatically have the chance to learn about cut and paste from different magazines with his photocopy machine(those days no computer editing days). There is so much fun going to his class.

My grade 5 and grade 6 class teacher (11-12yo). Couldn’t really remember how good is her teaching, but the warmth that I feel each time seeing her is still there. She can still remember our names (we’ve graduated for almost 30years!) We always try to meetup with her at least once every year. We could speak of anything with her. She’s more than a teacher to me. When I was grade One and was new to the school, I was cheeky and placed pencil on my ear. My class teacher asked me to rise and she put the pencil on my ear. I was not sure what happened that time but I cried. She was not very fierce at me but this event was imprinted in me.

My Grade 6 class teacher was fierce. She taught me Chinese and I was good at it. One day, she asked me to come forward and hit me with the cane. I did not understand what happened. When I was 11 years old I remember a Science teacher that had been very kind to me ever since I started my primary years at 7 years old. She was kind, sweet and was always positive thinking. She treated me better than other (I even got to be in the smart class even though my test results weren’t good).

She treated me the best among all the teachers I had. Even though she was only my Science teacher but she also helped me to train for my netball games or help me with my homework that I struggled with.

Due to her kindness towards me and help me throughout my primary years, my family donated a sum of money and materials for the school because of my Science teacher. I was really thankful for what she had done for me. Sadly she passed away few years ago during the pandemic. My last memory with her was going back to my kampung and visiting her at her house, playing with her children at her garden.

(2) Most Impressive teacher

Rather than a most impressive teacher, in my case, I will say the most impressive school (kindergarten). Because that kindergarten as a whole nurtures me a lot, it's impact was far beyond any teacher I've met, it truly secure my childhood memory, and gives me light. I went to a Methodist kindergarten which I think it is maybe a Montessori inspired kindergarten. I remember there’s a roundabout in the main entrance lobby, planted with Stargazer Flowers. There is a teacher who greets and welcome the coming students in the lobby. There’s a white chapel which glows goldenly under the morning sun. And every Monday assembly time, we sing and feel the heavenly sunlight penetrating from the glass window into the chapel. Even though my teacher differs by age, but what I feel is almost the same: kind, warm and gentle, and they talk a lot about fairy tales and the wonders of the stars and the milky way. And I always like to cuddle up in my favorite cozy reading corner or wondering at the flower bushes in the Kindy’s garden. It was a very beautiful and magical kindergarten. I believe it was the principle teacher who lead makes the magic happen. I never talk to her before, but I see her sometimes. A very elegant, gentle and firm person. I went back to see the kindergarten when bearing my first child. The kindergarten is still there, but the magic has gone. And that is maybe why I met Waldorf.

But, yes I do have some impression of a certain teacher. My teacher grade 1 &2 teacher, and my grade 4,5,6 teacher. I'm lucky that both of them shared some good similar qualities. They are quite strict, but kind and always there to listen and to help. They are nicely dress, clean and neat. They aren't judgmental, I notice that because we have a learning disorder special child in our class who we think as a child cause a lot of troubles, mess and jokes, and we make fun of him, but the teacher embrace him, even though sometimes they were quite annoyed, but they show that they accept him. And I still very feel touched, when I recall those memories.

I attended public school and when I was in Grade 3, we have Chinese language class after school. I joined because I wanted to learn Chinese language. The teacher was a male teacher in his 60s or 70s I assume, about the age of my grandfather. I could still remembers his smile and warmth when he was teaching us. So lively and full of joy!

When I was 12 years old, there was a teacher who impressed me the most was my math teacher. She knew that I was not good at math, instead of blaming me in class, she asked me to come to her for tutoring during recess, and let me go to her house on weekends and Sundays to teach me math there, although I finally I learned it very slowly, but she continued to guide me patiently on the contrary. She made me feel very warm and made me feel the inner perseverance and love. This prompts me to think back to myself and the teacher's reaction to me when I treat my children now, which affects my life.

The most impressive teacher on my mind is my class teacher at the age of 12. She is a science teacher, she was not serious but imposing. Her teaching method was very lively and fun. In my memory, she is the only teacher that i met in my primary school who tell stories in the classroom. I can still remember some parts of her story told and I will smile at my own when I recall back that moment.

The most memorable teacher for me was the music teacher I encountered in the fifth grade of primary school. He was also my class teacher. He was a married man of average build. Because I won the championship in a singing competition, I had to represent the school in the inter-state art song singing competition. And my music teacher was the one responsible for intensifying my training! I was very happy and excited, so I never really took the time to study what kind of singing style the art song, which was a completely new experience for me, should have.

The whole morning passed, and the song I sang was full of mistakes. The teacher was very angry and promptly replaced me, letting the second-place student take my spot. I regretted not taking it seriously and missing a precious opportunity while the teacher patiently taught me, all because I was too playful.

I remember there was a newly graduated young teacher who started to teach her 1st lesson in our class. She used lots of hand made visual aids during lesson time. Stories were told. Sang song with body movement then only linked to main lessons. She made the lesson became very interesting and lots of students' participation and engagement.

Although she only taught us for few months then officially reallocated to another school. I can always remember her.
