He was in college, when he decided to drop out and travel to Davis Gulch located in Utah. It is a narrow and deep slitrock filled with water, like a river. Surrounding Davis Gulch is a desiccated (p.88) expanse of bald rock and brick red sand. While on the move, he churned (p.91) out many letters that contained information about where he was and what he was doing.  He decided to create a nickname, calling himself "Nemo" which means no one. After making it to Utah, he was supposed to come back to Arizona, where his parents were waiting, but since his arrival was overdue (p.93) they sent out a search party for him. There was no success in finding his body or belongings, all they found was the name and numbers Nemo 1934 carved (p.94) into a stone slab. Most people believed he fell to his death, trying to hold on or climb the canyon wall. But it is said from Sleight that, "After corralling (p.96) his burros in Davis, Ruess hid all his stuff in a cave trying to play Captain Nemo."

Analysis: Krakauer introduces this character to make us think that there are more people dying or going missing mysteriously, living in the wild.

They read his two notes, one describing his futile (p.98) efforts to survive and the other note of him saying goodbye. Jim Gallien, an old friend of Chris and the man who drove him to Alaska reads the news and calls the state troopers (p.99) to inform them that he knew Chris. The police don't believe him and believe him to be a crank caller (p.100), but he then says that he met Chris on the Stampede Trail. He proceeds to try and help the police by saying the hiker (p.100) was from South Dakota, a lie McCandless told Gallien.

Analysis: Is it really that hard to find out someone's dead body? I'm sure people must know him as he has traveled the world. I'm glad they found out who he was though, even though it took long and was a very hard case.

He is tall and solidly proportioned (p.103), and wears glasses that make him look professional. His father's relationship with Chris was not that great and often they despised each other. His parents are still hurt by his death saying, "how can a kid with so much compassion (p. 104) cause his parents so much pain?" His parents loved him dearly and although his father has two families, he appreciated his company (p.104) more than his other children. Walt is a bad and hateful person, but he is very smart, he always gets what he wants and will do anything for it. Walt had a bad temper, but since the passing of his son, he became scared and chastened (p.105) making him softer. He graduated and got married young, he did that and was still financially successful. Walt then got a job at NASA, but quit after after four years and starting a consulting firm in Virginia. When Chris became older, Walt took him, Billie, and his other children to climb Longs Peak in Colorado, which was the highest summit (p.109) in Rocky Mountain National Park. These outdoor trips and adventures sparked Chris's love for traveling and exploring new places. Walt claims that Chris has a lot of natural talent and that if you try to polish his skill (p.111) they would hit a wall. Many people talked about Chris and described him as hardworking, goal focused and more.

Analysis: Walt's father seems to care about Chris even though he showed little to no love for him physically and in front of him, so he was kind of keeping it hidden. I wonder what would've happened if he was able to express his love. Chris gained his love for exploring and adventure through his father, and for that maybe Chris couldn't have died if his father never let Chris take these adventures. Walt's life seemed to fall apart after his son's death.

Chris graduates high school and was thrown a party, and during the party he says to his father that he is very grateful (p.118) despite their differences over the years. He then announces to his family that he will leave for his trip and no one tries to stop him, but they do try to give him an Texaco credit card for emergencies (p.118). Chris comes back from almost dying in the Mojave Desert and he gets enrolled into college from his parents. His father yells at Chris to not pull that stunt (p.119) again, but Chris bristled (p.119) his fatherly advice. He was enrolled in Emory University and was in a dorm with some other people. Chris's relationship with his parents deteriorated (p. 121) over the years and that causes Chris to start on his journey again.  He learns that his father has another family and gets enraged and leaves. He drops out of college and goes on his way not letting his parents know of his absence.

Analysis: Chris seems to love his family in the beginning before leaving for his journey, but after coming back he seems to have changed. He won't listen to his loving father and decides to go to college. After he is in college he rarely speaks to his parents and that causes his relationship with them to go South and to make it worse. He learns the truth about his father.

I know there will be some ups and downs from getting into stocks. Stocks are an unknowable source of investments. You can invest in a stock and wait for it to either do good or for the worse do bad. I have no clue how I'll do in stocks, but I am trying to give it my best right now since I am taking a class for it. As for becoming an architect, I know that task will also be difficult. There are a lot of steps to become an architect, you have to have great math skills, an imaginative/creative mindset, learn with the best, and have the willpower to persevere.

I admire him for striving to reach his goal in some stupid ways. I wish I would have the willpower to keep going on after almost dying and being stopped multiple times. I hate him too because he refuses to listen to anyone, and sometimes being headstrong can lead to bad things. Taking advice can be a good thing sometimes and I hate that he doesn't realize that. I was always taught to respect others and their opinions and sometimes that helps me get to places or reach goals. And if I know they want to help me, I would appreciate them instead of ignoring them and keep doing it.
