Students ages range from 17-19. They aim to apply a university abroad. Their English proficiency is around IELTS 6 in total. There are 15 students in the classroom.Activity: I will show a video of 5 famous Chinese stars speaking English in interviews, some American people mark and give opinions towards these different accents. Though four of these stars speak relatively good English, they can’t get rid of accents. The American people mention accents but they don’t think it’s a big deal because it doesn’t hinder communication. Having accents is completely normal. Then I will show students another video about 30 varieties of English across over the world. Then ask students how many varieties can they recognize and understand. These two videos show students that having accents when speaking English is normal, as long as it doesn’t hinder communication. But if they totally unfamiliar with some varieties of English, they can’t understand it and will fail to communicate. That’s why they need to know different varieties of English. When they go abroad to universities, they would meet people from all over the world with different English varieties. Language background: Bilingual (most with L2 Mandarin); able to use Standard English and Singlish (according to context and audience)

Majority of the students are Singaporeans. While they are fluent in English, they tend to use Singlish in their conversations with peers.

Rationale: To be receptive of different varieties of English as it is common to have people from different countries living within their community. Students are aware of the different varieties that are developed in Asian countries but they may be unfamiliar with other varieties. However, the knowledge would be useful as we place emphasis on the importance of being a global citizen.

Lesson Objective: To introduce different varieties of English and checking their understanding. To what extent do they understand what is being said (in different varieties)?

2.     Identify the Asian accents.
