Name as many of the technologies as you can that enabled these students to sing together despite stay-at-home orders due to covid. Do you use any of these technologies? How frequently--weekly? daily? Have you used technology lately to make art? Record music? Write poetry? Play games with friends? Talk to family members? If you did not have access to these technologies, what would you do? Should everyone have access to these technologies? Why or why not?

The goal is to detect earthquakes earlier than most programming in the hopes to warn a broader audience before the event actually happens. This is such a great advancement for areas that have frequent earthquakes. With this advancement, we could decrease the fatalities due to lack of awareness of earthquakes.

This article discusses Minecraft and it's advancements on creative thinking and planning. Most children have been exposed to this unique program that allows them to build artificial intelligence. The goal is to create cities in unseen locations. The technology I use daily is a smartphone and a laptop. Especially having school online, these tools have helped me to continue learning remotely. I can communicate with others through zoom and email, I can collaborate through google classroom, I can create videos to present information, etc. The list could go on and on. The first thing that comes to mind when referring to the use of technology in a different way than it was intended is QR codes. It wasn't a personal experience, but I have noticed restaurants using Qr codes to access their menu, rather than handing out physical copies. This not only limits the spread of covid-19, but also cuts down on paper usage!

I imagine some students used their smartphone camera, maybe flipgrid, snapchat, imovie, or even voice memos. I would say I use all of these quite frequently! I actually made some artwork last week on a program called procreate, which allows you to draw with a variety of brushes, colors, and mediums! I also used imovie over the weekend to compile photos I took on a trip to Asheville. It's incredible that most of these programs are at our fingertips, and I couldn't imagine not having them. I think everyone should have access to these technologies so they can also create solutions and connect with others.

This tool is aiming to flag the biases in artificial intelligence systems. I think "open source" means that it does not have restrictions. Anyone can access the tool and correct the issues it bring to the surface. I think researchers would make this tool to ensure equity and inclusion. For example, one mentioned was a potential gender bias. The program revealed that males were always represented as playing an instrument, while females were just in that area. These are important to note so that we can make an effort to include everyone and promote diversity.

This article discusses how Google is using Android phones for earthquake sensors for residents in earthquake prone parts of the world. The problem that google is trying to solve is reducing the amount of time someone can find out if there is an earthquake occurring so they can go into safety. What google is doing is really important because the quicker someone can find out that an earthquake is occurring, the more time they have to hide or get to safety so they do not get injured or killed. Another way that computer science and technology can/does help detect problems is with other natural disasters such as hurricanes, wildfires, tornados, snow storms, etc. The National Weather Service is a great example of this because they are the people in charge of sending out weather alerts before the storm has any significant impact (such as tornado watches and warnings) and this keeps many people safe and saves many lives.

The technology that this article discusses is how AI planners in Minecraft help machines design better cities. The main challenge that the participants had was that the competition was so open ended, they needed to master multiple objectives to please all of the judges that came from different types of backgrounds (architects, archaeologists, and game designers). The technology I use on a daily basis would probably be Youtube. Youtube helps me by keeping me occupied, gives me endless entertainment and helps me find cool new videos that may interest me. The problems and challenges that Youtube helps me solve is whenever I am stuck on school work or just stressed out by school work I just go to Youtube to watch a video I haven't previously watched and then come back to the work afterwards. A time I used technology in a way it was not necessarily intended was when I used my phone to find my airpods. Usually phones are for texting, calling, and going on social media but when I lost my airpods I used my phone's tracking app to find my airpods.

Some technologies that these students may have used that enabled them to sing at home due to COVID-19 would be their smart phones or tablets. Apps they could've used would be I-Movie, Splice, their phone camera, Zoom, Flipgrid, etc. I use a couple of these apps for school work and for coaching. The apps I recently used are Zoom and Flipgrid and I use these apps every other day to go to class and give a reflection/discussion on a topic in my class. I use Splice not that often but I mainly use it for creating video projects for a class or creating videos of my cross country and track teams. I have actually used technology recently to make a video project. In my Kinesiology class we had to video ourselves performing and describing different types of movements from around the body and I used my phone's camera and the Splice app to create a video of me performing and describing the movements. If I didn't have access to these technologies I feel like I would be fine without it because these technologies cause a lot of stress and anxiety for me and removing them would make me more confident in myself and in how I look. Depending on the type of technology being used I feel like many people should not have access to this type of technology. Like I said in my last point, video chatting, video editing, video projects all can cause a lot of stress and anxiety in people because they may not think they look good compared to someone else, or just struggle with public speaking in general. Like whenever I make a flipgrid I have to do it like 5-6 times because I get so nervous on how I look or how I speak and get nervous that I might say something wrong.

The tool that the article talks about helps clear biases from computer vision. The problem that it is trying to solve is AI systems creating bias that can influence things such as credit services and courtroom sentencing programs. I think open-source means that it is an available "source" or tool that others can use. The researchers made this tool because they wanted to automatically uncover any type of bias that could be found in visual data-sets. An example of bias in image sets would be males appearing with flowers in ceremonies or meetings while women appeared with flowers in staged photos and paintings. It is really important to be able to identify these biases because these biases can hurt someone and make people think differently about something. This relates to equity and inclusion because these biases can lead to sexism or "toxic masculinity" and if we can fix and eliminate these types of biases it could lead to more inclusion in different things such as sports, and hobbies and it could also lead to equity in everyday life.

Google is attempting to bring earthquake alerts to more places that might not have had the ability to be alerted in the past. The article states that an open-source automatically uncovers potential biases in visual data sets. Researchers would use this tool in order to weave out potential biases. Open-source means that it is available to the general public for use. Clearly, people have identified bias in AI usage, and when people with biases create these codes, the biases can transfer over to the computers. An example from the article is the gender bias in settings, whereas women are typically in the home-sphere and men in the workplace. An example that I thought of is the racial bias on Twitter. When multiple images are posted, in the smaller window it will always (from what I've seen) focus on the person with the lighter skin. These biases need to be recognized in order to be fixed for more equal and equitable representation and access to online spaces.

The article shares how Android phones are now able to detect when there is an earthquake near by and notify anyone that is within the area. It also discussed how places such as California, Mexico, and Japan already have technology systems that allow people to know when an earthquake has been detected. This type of technology is important because it can really help save a lot of lives and warn people of danger ahead of time. Technology can also be used to detect other types of emergencies such as sending out whether alerts for flooding as well as if someone goes missing.

I believe it is important that these things get flagged for bias because there is so many gender stereotypes in this world and we need to be able to stop them.

Some technologies that were possibly used may include zoom, smart phones, headphones, some type of video editing app, etc. I use zoom daily for classes due to COVID. I have not used technology to create art recently but I will be using it very soon to create a project for one of classes. I will need to create an activity, record myself, and utilize a green screen in order to add a cool background. I will potentially use this video in my future classes. This could be a great outlet for people during this time. Those who enjoy singing, dancing, writing and performing poetry, telling jokes, etc., could find great joy in being able to share their passions through the use of technology and the internet.

This technology helps to better urbanization of cities and create better communities in real life. As far as technology that I use in my daily life, I'm on my laptop, iPhone, and use a Whoop strap to track my physical activity. I think Zoom has unexpectedly solved a problem I did not seeing coming. All of my classes last semester were in person and I have an illness on the high risk list for covid. If it weren't for Zoom, I wouldn't have been able to complete school last semester.

If smart phones are able to do this it would give people in the area of the earthquake more time to prepare and evacuate. Some other ways computer science and technology can help detect other problems could be finding a way to have smart phones be able to track and detect more than just earthquakes. If they were able to track storms, flooding, and other things, it would be very beneficial.

This tool flags potential/artificial biases in sets of images. An open-source is a source that is open to the general public. The researchers would make this tool so there aren't as many biases and everyone can be included in the use of technology. An example mentioned in the article was males appeared with flowers in ceremonies or meetings. While females appeared with flowers in staged settings or paintings. Another one I can think of that then mentioned in the article were credit services and courtrooms. It's important to be able to identify these biases so you are aware of them and can stop them from reoccurring in the future. This relates to equity and inclusion because there shouldn't be biases and everyone should be equal and respect one another.

It gives people a few more precious seconds to seek shelter and safety in the midst of an earthquake. It's also crazy that the phone itself can detect whether it's a rumble from thunder, or if the phone has just been dropped. Computer Science can also aid in detecting Amber Alerts, sending individual messages to cellphones. It also aides in a quick call to 911. For example, with the iPhone all you have to do to call 911 in an emergency is press the power button a few times and it immediately alerts the authorities.

This is article is really in that it describes the technology of AI and the use of it in a game called Minecraft. Competitors were tasked with building a whole city in the Minecraft world using AI. They had to come up with the perfect algorithms that would create unique, well rounded, sturdy, realistic settlements while not overlooking small details and certain differences in land that could potentially cause disruptions for the AI. This is really fascinating because AI is already being used to document how cities are made and built in order to, in the future, alter those cities in a way that makes them safer, more sustainable, and resourceful. The technology I use on a daily basis allows me to check the weather, get directions to places, order items with express shipping, communicate with others, and many many other things. There was this one time when I got in a car accident and from the impact my body immediately went into shock. My arms and legs were completely numb and I couldn't move. The only way I was able to call somebody for help was through Siri. All I had to say was "Hey Siri, call 911 on speaker." And that was a life saver.

This tool is able to detect discrepancies within certain AI involved technologies specifically with face recognition. Some of these technologies have formed biases or stereotypes for certain types or groups of people leading to underrepresentation. I'm thinking that "open-source" means that the creators and users can detect and change problems dealing with underrepresentation, but I am not sure. If this is the reason, I would guess that they made the tool this way in order to decrease their own biases and stereotypes even more and essentially have "all hands on deck." Some examples they mention in the article is for instance, the AI gathered that men were usually associated with flowers when it had to do with a ceremony or meetings and for women, they were mostly associated with staged settings or paintings. I could imagine possibly AI grouping certain people in with certain geographical areas on a worldwide scale but also a bit more locally and contained. Equity is ensuring that everyone is given an equal amount and quality of opportunities, resources, or means to be successful based on their personal needs and interests. Everyone is different, not everyone can necessarily be treated "equally." Each person's needs must be met according to their specificity.

CS is good for detecting problems, such as Covid 19, as it can interpret, annualize, and file vast amount of data much faster than humans can. I use my computer on a daily basis and my cell phone. I love the flashlight part of an iPhone, I use it almost as much as I use it for calls and text.

Also things like zoom, Skype, and such allow for students to sing together too. I use my cell phone, tv, computer every single day. If I did not have access to this technology my life would be different, much harder.

The problem they are trying to overcome is the AI system and the implicit biases that are involved. Teaching kids to account for this issue and overcome it. Open source probably means to publicly accessible for sources. Gender was a big example of bias in technology. Race, hight, and language are probably other biases too. This kind of skewed view can negatively impact data and that in turn can have real life implications.
