Friends are the ones who are there for us to celebrate our brightest days and give the support we need on our darkest. Through friendships we grow, we learn more about ourselves, how others think, and we form a sense of belonging.
This theme is widely explored in most of the books I read in this class. In the texts, the main character is usually struggling and stuck in a dark place but friendship is what brings them out and saves them. Friendship is a universal concept, we see that since many of the books follow the story of a person either from a different culture or lifestyle. Friendship resonates with everyone. For example, in the book, "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstorn, the main character forms a close bond with the tree and the tree tries its best to make him happy. This text exposes the things we do for friendships such as sacrificing our needs just to make a friend happy. The tree really cared about the boy to the point where it allowed him to cut its branch and create a boat to sail away. In the text "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" Eduard learns the value of friendship in his long journey. He learns to appreciate those around him that deeply care for him. His journey taught him that friendships are far more important in life than his good looks and reputation. In the book "The Bear That Came Along" the main character took the bear to war with him and even though at some point he had to drop him off at the zoo, he would still often come back to check on him. This is very accurate with today's adults because as we get older we sometimes do not have time to see our friends as much we'd like but the bond is still there. We still check on each other after we get done taking care of other things.
