Themes in The Lottery

Once her family is chosen for the lottery, Tessie suddenly drops her cheery attitude and starts saying "It's not fair." repeatedly. This is the natural human instinct of self-preservation at work. She goes as far to suggest that her own daughter choose again in order to make sure she lives. However, there's also a hint of the theme of Protection, as she doesn't start retaliating when she is chosen, but rather when her entire family is chosen.

Themes in The Hunger Games

When Katniss' sister Primrose is chosen to compete in the Hunger Games, she almost immediately volunteers instead to save her sister's life. This is the human instinct of protection. By volunteering and putting her life on the line, she is protecting the person she loves.

How Are These Themes Shown?

In "The Lottery", we barely see the theme of self-preservation until Bill chooses the slip. Tessie immediately becomes defensive of herself and her family, by trying to suggest they redraw the slips because they "didn't give him time enough to take whatever paper he wanted." But throughout the entirety of both stories, the theme of destructive silence is shown because no one is standing up, which is why Tessie still gets stoned and Peeta and Katniss still get chosen .

Silence Is Not Always Golden

Though these stories have slightly different themes, there is one that they share: Silence can be deadly. In "The Lottery", no one but Mrs. Hutchinson speaks out about how unfair it is. Though some evidence points to the beginning of possibe skepticism, no one really says anything. The same thing can be said about The Hunger Games. During the Reaping, no one talks at all, let alone when a 12-year old is chosen to compete in a game the all but ensures death.
