Russia originally had a Russian birthday celebration called the “Naming Day”, an old religious tradition in Christian countries. All of the babies are named after their birth to welcome them into the community. In those days, people would take the name day as a day of celebration rather than the actual birthdays because people didn't have a calendar, and didn't know their exact birthdays. However, nowadays people are more focused on organizing birthday parties on their actual birthdays. But many families choose to celebrate Name Day as well. For the party, friends and family are joining in singing and dancing like an ordinary birthday party and feed everyone with traditional Russian food.

Russians usually only celebrate birthdays for their own children. Parents will organize a small party. They send invitations and prepare a Medovik cake decorated with small candles embroidered according to the age of the child. Then they turn off the lights and sing Happy Birthday and have the birthday person blow out the candles, similar to a typical Western celebration. After that, they give the gifts such as flowers or utensils.
