I still remember three years ago when I told my parents that I decide going study abroad. They looked at me strangely and considered as I was insane. It is insane; studying abroad was the hardest decision which I made in my life. At that time I was 24 years old, have graduated from college and have a stable job with fair payback. Studying abroad means that I need to give up everything I had and start a new life.

It is hard for most people to jump out of the comfort zone, particularly in my home country; some people never left a city in their lifetime. However, I was not satisfied with that. I have a dream; I want to see the outside world. When I headed towards on my airplane to Victoria, I was excited and full of hope. I knew that there are uncertain challenges waiting for me. Disrupting my comfort zone, bombarding myself with challenging people and situations—this is the best way I know to keep growing.

In home, I was a person who loves sports, always be optimistic with trouble and like to make surrounding people laughing. Friends and coworkers trust me and would like to stay with me because of my enthusiasm. The first challenge I encountered was loneliness. I have been through a difficult time with it. However, that depression has been cured when I was walking in our school’s gym. I started to put myself in the crowd, and try to talk with strangers. Gradually I gained confidence, and met a lot of friends.

They are my teammates, Big KG, Amu and Mike. We met at the basketball league of RRU. I still remember that we went through all the way to the final game, before that we have conquered several games together with Mike’s leader. His three-point always helps us turn around and beat the opponents. However, we were in trouble in the final match up, Mike broke his ankle. I was standing out as a new leader; I gave my best play in that league and support to my teammates, although finally we lost the game and the score was very close. That was such a memorable time for me.

After that I realized, sometimes in a state of emergency someone needs to step up and lead, but opportunities are reserved for those who are prepared. Good leadership does not only require professional skills and also the courage of taking responsibility under a difficult time and supporting each other. The emotion of a leader will impact followers’ performance, the positive energy would enhance the performance of everyone.I believe that no matter how hard it is, always keep claim and be optimistic. Be curious to outside world, meeting and working with different people can shift the way of my thinking and perspective of my view.

This summer I went to Hawaii with my girlfriend, which was my first time to touch the skyline. I still remember that I started preparation a week before the skydiving. I did a lot of researches about it, and be prepared for the risk. No matter how much preparation I did, I still felt very nerves. Because I have acrophobia and always become dizzy even in a high-rise elevator. Falling down from 12,000 feet sky is the craziest thing I have ever done. But I am such a person, always want to challenge myself. Sometime people need to learn how to face their own weakness.

The skydiving was carried out under the protection of a professional skydiving instructor. My coach was a very guy, he started conversation first and try to make me feel relax. He was introducing himself while he was teaching me the skydiving technique. Shortly, we established the relationship between each other. Skydiving is a high-risk sport. As partners, it requires the cooperation from both of us to ensure the safety. The plane carried us up to 12,000 feet, and when the gate was opened, the wind pushed on my face. You can image how amazing it was in that instant. At that moment, I was flying.

Problem is opportunity

It inspired me a lot, firstly, no matter how you prepare, emergencies in reality may break the original plan at any time. When an emergency occurs, the first thing a leader does is to observe the around people and analyze the situation. Communication is always the best way to calm the followers. Secondly, trust your partner. Believe in their professional knowledge and expertise. A leader needs self-awareness and be clear that what is his limitation, but some time you have to push youself. Finally, a leader should have the vision to look at the problem from different angles. If you and your team is experiencing a fall down, do not worry and chin up, it is the best opportunity to improve yourself. Sometime, the reward is worth to take a risk.

Goal 1. A Charismatic Leader

My first goal is to become a charismatic leader in my future. Charismatic leader is the one who has positive impacts on the surrounding people, and people will be motivated by the leader’s personality. For me, I believe that I already equipped with the personality of a charismatic leader. So I need to learn how to be leader.

I would like to use the model of learning to be a leader as a guide for me.

1. Practice acts of leadership in my everyday life.

My study in RRU is the best opportunity for me to practice acts of leadership. Our team did a great job during this semester; I will keep work hard on my rest of study

2. Emulate successful leaders

I will use my holiday time to read those good leaders’ biography. And also there are many good “leaders” in my class, I should learn from them.

3. Find a mentor to provide feedback

Joseph is my best friend. I really appreciate his leadership style and his attitude of study. I would like to ask him if he could be my mentor.

4. Complete a leadership course to improve skills

I already finished one leadership course. I learned so much useful knowledge from professor Gita. I believe I will take more leadership courses in my rest study in RRU.

5. Work to develop personal traits of empathy and patience

Empathy and patience are always important for a good leader, which are also my shortages. I should focus on that in my future study and work.

The leader who is all action and little vision is a doer. He may be a hard worker and dedicated to the job and the organization, but the doer is working blind. Without a sense of purpose and direction, activities have no real meaning and do not truly serve the organization and employees. To be an effective leader, dream big and strategic action is necessary. I would like use the model of the domain of strategic leadership to train myself.

Strategic leadership the ability to anticipate and envision the future, maintain flexibility, think strategically, and initiate changes that will create a competitive advantage for the organization in the future P398

1. Having vision

How can I clearly describe my vision to people and make them believe in?

Communication skill is important. In my rest of study and work, I really need to improve my communication skill. To make sure the communication is effective; I should do more workshops to practice my language.

2. Taking action

What strategies should I use to engage people working with me?

I think engage people to contribute for the team is a challenge for every type of leader. As a charismatic leader, I will lead by using halo effect, encouraging my colleagues by my enthusiasm.

3. Self-reflection

Can I do it better in the next time?

Challenges make me tougher and better. Self-reflection is the way to analyze myself; therefor I think doing journal is necessary. The journal should be done at the end of each semester. And share the journal to my mentor will be more effective for self-growth.
