Obtaining a coaching endorsement was a learning experience that really worked for me. I learned how actively listen and communicate effectively with teachers. I also learned the many roles of my position as an instructional specialist. Knowing the many roles helped me to anticipate and embrace the needs of the teachers.

I joined a nature club and learned a significant amount of information through nature outings (walks, camping, etc.) which is a nontraditional method of learning. This instilled in me the desire to spend time in nature and to also observe nature. The club leader took us on walks in various areas and terrain, discussed the trees, plants and animals, pointed out edible plants and allowed us to try them, discussed ecosystem relationships, etc. all while hiking. This out of the box learning experience is one of my fondest college memories and has impacted me more than any class I took. I think it is important to remember that learning does not have to take place in a formal classroom.

I will never forget "Pioneer Days" at my elementary school. We had learned about Westward Expansion and our culminating activity was recreating a wagon train, with assigned identities and objectives for the day. I dressed in my finest "Little House on the Prairie" outfit, complete with bonnet. We followed a route around the school grounds with our wagons, carts, and make-believe horses. We ended up sunburned with a multitude of mosquito bites, just like real pioneers. We had to deal with sickness, both real and pretend. We had to solve problems along the way, without help from the teachers. We talked about this experience the rest of the year. I connected with this topic and activity, and was able to utilize my creativity and problem solving skills.
