Andrew Goodwin mentions that traditional narrative analyses don't apply to pop music videos.
This simply means that Goodwin thought pop music videos didn't have the traditional beginning, middle and end structure that novels and films have.
He says that pop videos tend to have a different structure because of the following things...
1. He believes that the pop music videos are built around the song.
2. The singer is used as both a narrator and as a character in the video.
3. The singer often looks into the camera as a means to try to involve the viewer with their performance.
4. There is commonly as relationship between the visuals, music and lyrics in music videos.

This is a type of music video where new meanings are introduced that do not contradict with the lyrics but add layers of meaning

An example of an amplification music video would be 'Love The Way You Lie' - Eminem and Rihanna.
The music video's narrative shows a complicated relationship between two lovers. Parts of the video show them being deeply in love with eachother but other parts show them maybe being infatuated with eachother too much. To the point where they can't trust them around others.
The story brings more context to the title 'Love the way you lie'. The context being that they love each other so much that lying is quickly forgiven.
The artists are seen as the narrators and observers of the narrative. They are observers because they are only seen performing the song and not a part of the narrative, therefore, not the main focus of the video.
Overall, the video is 60:40 in a ratio of narrative to performance.

Disjuncture Music Videos

Disjuncture is used to describe music videos that have little connection between the lyrics and the video or where the video contradicts the lyrics.

An example of disjuncture in a music video would be in 'Time to Dance' - The Shoes.
The narrative in the music video shows the life of a serial killer (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) who murders 'hipsters' in Dalston, a district of East London.
The narrative shows no connection to the lyrics of the song as they are about dancing and having a good time. Where as, the narrative is about killing and death. The narrative almost contradicts the lyrics in that it's negative and the lyrics are positive.

The artists are not featured in the music video and are not in the focus of the narrative. Therefore, this make the music video entirely narrative with zero performance by the artist.

These are music videos that reflect the story of told by the lyrics of the song. Dance can often be seen to be used to express the feelings and moods within the song.

An example of an illustration music video would be 'What Goes Around...Comes Around' - Justin Timberlake.
The narrative in this music video is about a woman who was unfaithful to a man in their relationship. Eventually he finds out, they fight, and end up in a car chase in which she presumably dies. The story show the truth in the name of the song and the words of the chorus. She got what she had coming to her.
The artist can be seen as a participant in the narrative as well as the narrator. He shares the focus on the narrative with the woman.
Overall, the ratio of narrative to performance in this music video is 60:40 (in the linked music video below).
