By appealing to this demographic, I hope to encourage understanding of the disability and support by showing how the disability affects those diagnosed and the people around them. In order to hook the audience from the start, I will briefly show a teacher supporting a student with muscular dystrophy, then cut to the teacher in class with the student missing, and show the teacher’s concern for the students continued absence.

Jung, I, Chae, JH, Park, SK, Kim, JH, Kim, JY, Kim, SJ et al 2012, 'The correlation analysis of functional factors and age with duchenne muscular dystrophy', Annals of rehabilitation medicine, vol. 36, no. 1, pp. 22.

In this article, the authors research and discuss the correlation between the age of a patient diagnosed with muscular dystrophy and the development of various stages of the disease. The author also explores the flaws in our current method of categorising the various forms and stages of muscular dystrophy, and proposes that we develop a sounder system.

For me, this article may prove useful to as a source of statistics to be featured at the end of the video. However, the statistics presented chronicle the effects of muscular dystrophy over a lifetime, which may be too much information for a small portion of the video, or perhaps as a source of a description of what muscular dystrophy is to base my video around.

Punnoose, A, Kaltman, J, Pastor, W, Mccarter, R, He, J & Spurney, C 2016, 'Cardiac Disease Burden and Risk of Mortality in Hospitalized Muscular Dystrophy Patients', Pediatric Cardiology, vol. 37, no. 7, pp. 1290-1296.

In this article, the authors research and discuss the mortality rate of patients diagnosed with muscular dystrophy in an attempt to produce a clearer average than we already have.

For my video, this source could provide more useful and brief statistics, allowing me to more easily make a quick connection with the audience.

Kohler, M, Clarenbach, C, Böni, L & Brack, T 2005, 'Quality of Life, Physical Disability, and Respiratory Impairment in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy', American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, vol. 172, no. 8, pp. 1032-6.

In this article, the authors discuss the quality of life for those diagnosed with muscular dystrophy and the affect it has on their physical wellbeing. As well as this, the authors discuss the effect of the disability on the body throughout life and the toll it takes on the lungs.

To me, this article could provide me with more statistics surrounding muscular dystrophy, in particular, it’s physical effects on the body and the effect it has on people’s daily life.

Steele, M, Taylor, E, Young, C, Mcgrath, P, Lyttle, BD & Davidson, B 2008, '‘Mental health of children and adolescents with Duchenne muscular dystrophy’', Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology, vol. 50, no. 8, pp. 638-639.

In this article, the authors address the lack of research into the mental effects of muscular dystrophy on those diagnosed. Through her research, she discovers that around half of the children diagnosed with muscular dystrophy are often diagnosed with mental illnesses such as ADHD and anxiety and learning impairments. She closes the article by that children diagnosed with muscular dystrophy may require a different approach when trying to treat their mental illness.

When planning and creating my promotional video, I hope to explore the psychological effects of the disability of those diagnosed, as well as those around them. I could use this source as the basis of my video’s approach to the psychological issues someone diagnosed with muscular dystrophy may face.

Huml, RA 2015, Muscular dystrophy : a concise guide, Springer, Cham.

Edited by Raymond A. Huml, this book goes in-depth in to muscular dystrophy as a whole, detailing various aspect of the disability, how it effects it’s victims, genetic mutations, various available treatments and so on.

For my video, I will most likely use this source to cross reference the information presented in other articles and books that I have found, ensuring everything I claim is correct. This book in particular will be useful for cross refencing, as it covers many aspects of the disability.

Now that week two is done, I’m starting to get a better idea of what I should do for this assignment. With the topic of spreading awareness for muscular dystrophy in mind, I’ve started to build up a mind map of possible ideas for my video for assignment two, and started to use divergent thinking more, as I haven’t done much of it before. Reaching 100 ideas in the mind map seems like a stretch though.

Similarly, harassment seems like it would have more around this age than anyone older, making the video seem more grounded.
