In Comfort Crowd by Conan Gray the lyrics are used to distinguish the speaker as Conan Gray or someone experiencing loneliness. The occasion is about how he misses friends when he moves off to college. The audience is the friends that Conan misses. The purpose was to help Conan cope with his loneliness. Speaking of loneliness, that is the subject including missing friends. The tone of the lyrics are ambivalent and nostalgic as well as a bit depressing because Conan is confused about his loneliness and is missing his friends while looking back on all the good times they shared.

Speaker: Conan Gray or someone suffering from loneliness.
Occasion: It is generally about missing one’s friends and feeling overwhelmed by isolation and loneliness. Since this can happen anywhere at any time there’s no specific location, but for Conan it happened when he went to college without his friends.
Audience: The friend(s) that Conan misses. It is apparent in verses 2 and 3 it shows that Conan is “welling up in tears as I lay upon your belly” and even cries “all over your body”. The “your” makes sense to be the friend(s) he misses.
Purpose: It was created to aid Conan in working through his feelings of loneliness when he went off to college and his friends stayed in Texas.
Subject: Loneliness and missing friends.
Tone: It’s very ambivalent and nostalgic. Conan is confused about his feelings on being apart from his friends and the difference in music shows that. At the beginning the music is just bass and vocals, and then there is guitar and its more upbeat. He also wishes to go back to when he could just spend time with his friends and “mess around”.

Conan acting as the speaker attempts to reach out to his friends and explain that he is lonely and doesn't know how to deal with being apart from his friends. He uses the appeals of pathos and ethos in the lyrics and the appeals of pathos and logos in the music video to get the message across that he is struggling with loneliness. In analyzing the lyrics alongside the music video, it appears that Conan was effective in getting his message across.

The music video of Comfort Crowd is used to bring notice to Alter Conan's voice as the speaker. The occasion of the video isn't specific, but the time is during a day in an empty house. The audience isn't shown in the video, but we can guess that it's for Conan's friends. The purpose is to express loneliness and isolation when someone is alone. The subject for the music video, like the lyrics, is about loneliness and missing friends. The tone is more dark than the lyrics due to the emptiness and the murder depicted.

Speaker: The speaker is Conan Gray until 0:31 when he gets killed and Alter Conan takes over. Alter Conan is like the loneliness reaching out for help.
Occasion: The occasion isn’t anything special, it’s just a time loneliness is being felt. The time is daytime until 1:24 where it is darker outside so we can assume it’s evening. The place is a big empty house which we can assume is Conan’s. The setting is throughout the house in different rooms like the foyer, the kitchen, and even the backyard.
Audience: The audience is not present in the video itself, but we can assume it’s the people that Conan misses like friends that are far away because Alter Conan uses dead Conan as company.
Purpose: The purpose is to show how isolating loneliness can be and how it’s hard to deal with on your own. Sometimes loneliness seems so big that it can be personified into its own being like Alter Conan.
Subject: The subject is loneliness, missing friends and needing company.
Tone: The tone is dark and desperate. There is a murder depicted so that is dark. Alter Conan is seen alone quite often in different areas of the house until he engages in activities with Conan’s corpse. It can be interpreted as desperation for company even if it’s with someone that is no longer living.

Lyrics First Appeal: PATHOS

The first appeal in the lyrics of Comfort Crowd is pathos. The first appearance of pathos in the lyrics is in the first verse: "Beggin' on my knees/ Screamin', "Someone come and help me" ". This lyric appeals to pathos because of the use of “begging” and “screamin’”. Those words show pain and anguish which effectively appeals to ones emotions to let them know pathos is being used.
The second appearance of pathos is in the chorus: "Yeah, I just needed company now/Yeah, I just needed someone around/Yeah, I don't care what song that we play/Or mess that we make/Just company now". These lyrics are repetitive as a chorus usually is, but it gives a sense of constant reassurance and trying to keep one’s self from going insane from loneliness. It’s a desperate plea for company no matter the situation or what the other friend wants to do. “I” (Conan) just wants to be in someone’s company.

Lyrics Second Appeal: ETHOS

The second appeal in the lyrics of Comfort Crowd is ethos. The first appearance of ethos in the lyrics is in the first verse where Conan states: "I've already hid the body". To me this can be interpreted as Ethos because everyone is aware of what “hiding a body” entails. It means that one is literally hiding a body or that one is hiding something they do not want to be found as a figure of speech.
The second time ethos is present in the lyrics is in the bridge: "We mess around/ And laugh too loud/ And make the sounds/ We try to hide when people are around/ By blood we're bound/ Through ups and downs/ Through smiles and pouts/ Comfort crowd/ You can always count". This string of lyrics appeals to ethos through the way everyone can relate to sharing something with a friend that others don’t understand. This is effective because it is relatable and we can understand how Conan feels. The specific lyric: “and make the sounds we try to hide when people are around” gives lieu to the inside jokes being shared between friends, in this case it’s Conan and his friends.

Music Video First Appeal: PATHOS

The first appeal in Comfort Crowd's music video is pathos.
Pathos appears in the music video at the time stamp of 0:30 alter Conan kills Conan. Basically, Conan’s loneliness (alter Conan) kills himself after trying to exist alone with his thoughts and himself for so long. It tugs at emotions through the brutality of a murder and shows how loneliness can suck the life out of things.
The appearance of pathos also happens at the time stamp of 1:40-1:45 when it depicts dead Conan falling off a chair. Then at 1:56-2:01 when it shows alter Conan throwing popcorn at dead Conan while smiling. This can appeal to pathos through humor, as that is a way that people cope with negative emotions at times. A negative emotion being loneliness is present throughout the music video.

Music Video Second Appeal: LOGOS

The second appeal is Comfort Crowd's music video is logos.
Logos appears in the music video at the time stamp of 1:50-1:52 it shows the lights flicker on and off. This appeals to logos because it shows how loneliness can cause instability. Lights flickering usually means that the lightbulb is dying and slowly losing power to work. The use of the flickering light also relates to how loneliness feeds off a person’s energy until there is only emptiness left.
Logos also appears through out the whole video because Alter Conan is the only one in the house besides dead Conan. This also appeals to logos because it is blatantly showing how loneliness can literally be caused by being alone by yourself. Especially in a big house like the one Conan is in.

In conclusion, Conan was able to get his point across to his friends through the use of pathos and ethos in the lyrics as well as the appeals of pathos and logos in the video. The lyrics help to convey Conan's view of loneliness and needing comfort by reaching out to his friends. Meanwhile, the music video using the appeals of pathos and logos use humor and logic to get his point across.
