I think that him knocking over the clock could represent his feelings of stress towards talking with her again after a long time. Also I think that him immediately catching it and playing cool could represent him trying to act like nothing has changed from when they last talked. Tom comes from a wealthy and powerful family, and this background shapes his sense of entitlement and privilege. He is dismissive of the feelings and needs of those around him, including his wife Daisy. He is also abusive towards Gatsby, who he sees as an outsider and a threat to his relationship with Daisy.
For example, when Gatsby and Daisy are reunited, Tom becomes jealous and confrontational. He uses his wealth and social status to try to intimidate Gatsby and undermine his relationship with Daisy.
Furthermore, Tom's family is also connected to the corrupt world of the "Old Money" aristocracy, which influences his moral compass and allows him to participate in illegal activities such as buying and trading stocks on inside information, and engaging in extramarital affairs.

His right hand suddenly ordered divine retribution to stand by. 'I am the son of some wealthy people in the Middle West — all dead now. I was brought up in America but educated at Oxford, because all my ancestors have been educated there for many years. It is a family tradition'". This quote reveals the hidden fear that drives Gatsby which is the thought of people finding out that he isn't what he says he is, he didn't come from a rich family or go to Oxford like he says. Later in the book we find out that Gatsby came from a poor family and had visited Oxford while serving in the army and never truly went there, he built his wealth by himself through scandalous means. This is such a drive for him because throughout the book we find that many people have different rumors and perceptions of him, none which are true but hide the truth of Gatsby's origins which allows him to have a stronger appearance to the public. He is so focused on recreating the past that he ignores any advice Nick gives him to let stuff go. I think that Gatsby's insane drive to have higher social status amplify's his mindset that he can get Daisy, no matter the fact the she is married now with kids. I think that Gatsby also has a huge fear of letting go of the past which drives him even further to get with Daisy.

I believe that Toms main goal hes reaching for during the book was to maintain his perception as powerful by others. He does this by punching people, showing off his wealth, and having high confidence levels.
